Traumatic Experiences Check-In 13 May 2020

Hello and Good morning my friends! On this beautiful Wednesday I felt it would be a good time to talk about the steps we can all take to help us to overcome past or current trauma. Practicing mindfulness is truly a skill that all could at least try to adopt into their everyday lives. Mindfulness is the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something in the present moment. For instance, one may walk up the road and see trash littering it. That person may pick up and dispose of this trash because they have chosen to be mindful of nature and the desire to keep the planet clean. This is practicing the art of mindfulness. Other ways of practicing mindfulness are listed below.

Eating mindfully

Observing ones breathing

Connect to ones senses

Pause between actions

Listen wholeheartedly

Observing Thoughts and Emotions

Being mindful can be practiced in many other ways as well which are not confined to the six that I have listed above. I personally have found living in the present is effective in overcoming my own personal past traumas and I hope these help with you all as well.

I will ask three questions of you all today:

How are you feeling?

What have you done or do you plan to do to practice mindfulness in your everyday lives?

What recommendations would you have for a future check in topic?

Again I would like to thank you all for providing your time to participate in this thread and I do wish you all a better today than yesterday in hopes of an even brighter tomorrow!

@CaringBrit

I can't sit down for long either most days my friend. This pandemic has only made it worse in regards to my restlessness. I have been forcing myself to do more stretching and exercises daily to reduce the energy in my legs to a point I cannot pace around. This has helped me to sit still. Meditation helps me in this regard as well.

heart I'm feeling good today! I had really stressful nightmares last night, but I'm awake and in reality now, and my reality is happy. :) Actually, a family member who hasn't talked to me in years reached out to apologize for not believing me when I said my mom was abusing me as a kid... I just finished the email back.

heart Usually my mindfulness comes in self-awareness. I often react without thinking, and if I stop and take a second to be mindful, I handle situations a lot better. I'm going to practice present-world mindfulness a lot more. I get really stuck in my head all the time at the slightest hint of stress! I think it'll help me to calm down.

heart For future check-ins, do you have anything on how to practice self-care and mindfulness of self without being selfish? How do you know when it's time to put yourself aside for someone else when you struggle with mental health?

Good afternoon my friend! Acceptance can be hard to come to and I am glad you're finally receiving the validation that is needed to help you overcome past abuses. As for your self awareness I just want to say I am proud of you for having the strength to be self aware in the midst of your struggles. Present-world mindfulness has been my focus for a while now and it has positively changed my entire outlook on the world in general. Its common for me to live in my head most days but being self aware and building discipline in regards to our own individual ways of thinking can slowly help guide us to finding that balance we all desperately seek. As far as knowing where to draw the line in regards to self care; this may be an issue that varies from individual to individual as we all require different levels of care depending on the severity of the trauma inflicted. I try not to rush myself and wait until I am in a comfortable mindset to be able to listen to others without it negatively influencing myself. I will focus on this topic more in depth next Wednesday so I would like to thank you for the topic my friend.

@Understandingempath Hey - How are you?

Anxiety has been a big issue. Lack of sleep. Just stressed. I've lost hours of time today - just poof - gone.

Mindfulness has a tendency to come and go. Sometimes we do okay with it, other times it doesn't go as well. Pauses are better. Listening to the sounds that are around. Breathing is a problem, today especially. Eating is at times forgotten or avoided for various reasons. Emotions are another issue at times because they're often over whelming, so they often get pushed down and ignored until they cant be any longer. Thoughts.... Thoughts are probably a little harder to explain because there are usually more from various places then is probably normal for most people.

At the moment I can't think of anything to recommend.

Thank you for the check in.

It is unfortunate that you are having to deal with so many struggles my friend. I have been fortunate in not having as many of the symptoms that you are currently experiencing and I would like to extend my gratitude to you for overcoming them to participate in this thread. That alone shows me you are trying your best to climb out of this pit so many of us find ourselves in. I agree with you on your thoughts relating to mindfulness. It is so easy to forget and fall back into old habits as those are the ones that come to us the easiest due to the regularity of our developed routines. I hope in time you will find your way to the surface and I will always lend a helping hand to get you there if needed. If you ever desire a 1:1 chat to discuss anything just know myself and other listeners are here for you when you feel you need our ears. For lack of sleep I take melatonin which helps but meditation and aroma therapy is ultimately what calms me to a point that I can sleep. Positive coping techniques are always beneficial once one finds the techniquest that work for them. I hope you find those my friend. Don't worry about not having ideas for topics, I only asked because I will be using the suggestions for next week and the weeks that follow. I find that doing this truly involves the forum as a whole and makes this check-in as much your work as it is my own. I hope you find a way to seize the day and not lose so much of it in your struggles. Thank you again for your participation my friend.
