Hey, I'm new here. Not sure if this is the right subforum for me but I think it is. I have a few questions about therapy as it might relate to me.
Most of my trauma was in the form of neglect and feeling like I was nothing but a burden to my parents. There aren't many big events to discuss, and really those don't sum up my childhood in any really way. It was just constant fear, loneliness, abandonment, and a little parentifacation thrown in for good measure. How do I talk about that with a therapist that seems to be looking for the "big event" in my childhood so they can help me work through it, when there really wasn't a singular event?
What should I look for in a therapist? I've been to two. The first one seemed to deny I had a reason to be there. The second spent more time talking about her relationship with her husband than paying any attention to why I was there. Even when she assigned homework she didn't even care to look at it or even remember that she suggested it. I'll be honest, both of them have left a bad taste in my mouth but I know I need help with figuring out how to help myself.
I think that enough to start.
Thanks all.
@Wilde1 neglect IS 100% trauma! You are in the right subcom :) thanks for joining us and welcome!!!! I hope you are well!
Regarding your comments on therapists... yes, most therapists will be looking for a specific event not working in the overall feelings you have. The thing with mental illness is its a all of trial and error! You do have to work hard everyday, you do have to find what works for you!
Hope this helps,

Thanks.
@Wilde1
Welcome!
Sorry it sounds like youre having trouble finding a therapist who is a good fit for you. The first one I went to was OK and I wouldve stayed there but I ended up having to switch due to insurance issues. And Im so glad I did! The second guy, hes fantastic. Were very good match personality wise. From my limited experience, it seems like sometimes you have to try a few therapists before you find one is a good fit for you personally. I hope you can find one that you feel comfortable with and that you also feel heard & listened to. I know thats really important to me.
And I agree with krispykitty. All trauma matters, whether it was one big event or 1000 small things. It sounds like what you went through has definitely impacted you. If it affected your life, then it matters. I hope you find support youre looking for in this community.
When I first started going to therapy, I couldnt even talk. I would just type out everything on my phone ahead of time then show it to the therapist and have him read it. Ive been doing for a couple years now and I can actually speak. Usually. I have found that talk therapy has helped me a lot. Its still hard to talk sometimes and it definitely is a lot of work but it does help. Im finally starting to feel like A human being again. Its been a few years. A long few years. Less flashbacks and anxiety attacks now. But its still a challenge sometimes.
