What an incredibly difficult letter to write... and what a potential for healing...
I can't focus on it right now, I am not sure it would be a good idea, but I want to thank you for this post.
Included in my letter
I'd have a long monologue about underlying body image issues that I've had longer than I even realized. I'd also include some things about what trauma can be & how it's never overly dramatic, how manipulative people can be, how wonderful people can be, explore what love means and how I prefer to give / receive it.
Tips & Do Differently:
- Every experience and relationship teaches me something, even if it was a very painful experience.
- Have patience and trust facts rather than opinions. Impatience and trusting opinions (even those of professionals) only worsened my self image and body image. So trust myself, how my body feels.
- Find movement that is enjoyable.
- Take pride in getting more sleep, not how little sleep you can 'live' off of because trust me, you're not entirely lucid haha
- Self-care and meditation are not cheesy. They're not trope-y. Black women do need therapy, too. It doesn't make me weak or 'crazy'. Better yet, question those who say therapy makes me weak or crazy. What things might they be dealing with to project onto me?
- Don't focus on fitting in so much. There have been people who try to alientate me from my own community, family, and self. Don't give so much power to what they think. As long as I'm not breaking a law, causing harm to myself, or causing harm to others, I'm fine. People project insecurities onto who they think are weak and that has nothing to do with me.
- Eat enough. Focus mindfully on how each bite feels. Appreciate where the food came from. Acknowledge that I have an abundance of food and there is no logical reason to restrict it or get rid of it through binging. Food has no morals. People do. A person's "morals" can be rooted in disordered thoughts. I am more susceptible to other people's morals than I thought and that partially led to my disorder. Figure out what my own morals and values are and trust those instead. Trust that my body knows what it's doing. Food is nourishing in different ways. Some offer more for the body, some offer more for the soul.
- Be gentle with myself. I'm human. Perfection is a myth.
Thank you for the check-in! This has been incredibly helpful and relieving! I actually felt myself relax even more just writing this here. Can't wait to write it in my journal too.
