Traumatic Experiences Community Daily Checkin - Monday 10th July 2017

Morning everyone smiley Well I am sitting here with my coffee, trying to wake up and pondering what to write for todays checkin. I have been thinking a lot about self-criticism, a concept that I know many of you know well!!! Self-criticism can cause so much harm. We often don't need anyone external to put us down, because many of us already do this to ourselves. We blame ourselves for what we have gone through, for the actions of others, for how we feel, for what we don't do, for not being good enough, for being who we are and so on.

Self-criticism often leaves us feeling worse about ourselves, where we put ourselves down so much, we may even question what the point is of trying to do things differently, because we believe we are not good enough, or will fail or are not good enough just because of the person we believe we are etc.

But today's checkin will be about self-criticism and using this as a motivator or a force for change. Are there any personal traits that you continually criticise yourself for having eg perhaps you feel your overweight, lazy, impulsive, judgmental, impatient etc. Many of us can be hard on ourselves perhaps because we think this will help us to change, but the reality is, it can actually make us feel worse about ourselves. We are also continually hard on ourselves, because for many of us, we grew up in households or environments where we were put down, criticised and condemned for any little thing we did and for who we were. And so for some of us, we have carried on being the self critical voice, we got used to hearing when we were younger.

How often do you stop to consider the emotional pain, that being self critical causes? How do you feel emotionally when you are self critical? How would it feel to begin giving yourself compassion for the fact you are judging yourselves so harshly?

Todays challenge for you smiley Instead of beating yourselves up, try and think of kinder and more caring ways to motivate yourselves to make changes you wish to see happening in your lives? What language would a wise and nurturing friend, parent, teacher, or mentor use to gently point out how your self critical behaviour is unproductive, while at the same time encouraging you to do something different. What is the most supportive message you can think of thats in line with your underlying wish to be safe, healthy and happy?

Every time you catch yourself being judgmental about your unwanted trait in the future, try and notice the pain of your self-judgment and give yourself compassion. Then try to reframe your inner dialogue so that it is more encouraging and supportive. Remember that if you really want to motivate yourself, love is more powerful than fear. Are you up for challenging your self critical voice?

This space is yours to share whats happening in your world, in you day, whether good, bad or inbetween. Its a safe and supportive space to share whats on your mind, share any achievements, positive things happening for you, any troubles you may feel today. Healing from Trauma is hard work, so be gentle with yourselves and show some kindness to you!!!

@dancingRainbow45 Instead of pointing out my flaws I come up with lists of things I can do to improve those flaws. I want to work out more so I came up with a plan for that instead of calling myself fat.

@rationalWillow8882 Oh I love the sound of this Willow and would love to see how that plan looks and works for you. It sounds as if your really willing to try and find a way to overcome the self critical messages smiley Perhaps take a look at my response above which also poses some questions to consider when challenging the negative self talk yes

I am so out of touch with myself I have no idea if I am self critical. I'll try to be mindful and see if there is any self critism.

@Mellybelly That sounds a great approach to take Melly and it was interesting reading how because your so out of touch with yourself, you may not be able to recognise if your being self critical. Mindfulness is an good approach to take for some people. It may help you to consider trying to be more aware in the here and now and become more intune with how you feel, what you think etc. This can be difficult for those who as a way of coping have dissociated or shut off when the need arises to cope.

@melliotm listening now. Very powerful words. I've not come across this before, but I love it. How does it make you feel when you listen to this? smiley Thank you for sharing this. Does this make you feel less alone knowing others can appreciate and have experienced what you may have felt from time to time? Be gentle when doubt comes, when fear chokes...spend special care to bring love to your own self, to your own vulnerabilities. Know you are being given a chance to build your own garden of internal love heart

Yes, infinitely so. It makes for a great comfort. I listen to it almost daily. :)

@rozie @dancingRainbow45 I didn't speak too soon, because for the most part I was able to maintain an air of self compassion today. However, tonight the pendulum has swung away from self love to... not self-loathing, mercifully but definitely feeling guilty for things that I shouldn't claim possession of, eg, other people's moods. It's not me, it's them, (as a recent mantra that I stumbled across goes) yet my natural reflex is to cringe, cower, and resist the urge to apologize for.. everything and nothing at the same time (and of course catastrophize, because that's what imagination does when you've been conditioned to expect the worst and hope for the best).

@BeeLeigh Sorry to hear your finding this situation difficult Bee. Have you got a good dentist who you can explain to them how your feeling, to see if there is a way they can reassure you. Have you taken with you a list of what you can cope with and what your not ready to face yet? Have you seen this dentist before? Speak to the dentist if you can, you dont have to go into any detail about any fears or worries you have and see if they can spend some time chatting with you, explaining what they need to do, what you will allow to happen, to practise the stop signal if it all gets too much for you.

@dancingRainbow45

It was a new dentist. My old one doesn't take the insurance I have now ☹️. On the medical history sheet I had to fill out, it had "Nervousness/Anxiety" listed and "Psychiatric/Psychological" in the "Yes/No" section so I said yes to both. I've been having problems with my gums, so they did some X-rays and the one where it goes all the way around your head, and then she looked at my gums. She said there was no sign of infection, but that there could be something starting since they're so sensitive and inflamed. So she gave me an antibiotic and an oral rinse. It wasn't too bad. I just already don't like the dentist and this was a new one. I was okay with going to my old one so it sucked that I couldn't go back 😕
