Wednsday Trauma check in with 🔥 01/20/21

January 20th, 2021

Hiya peeps welcome to the Wednesday check in with 🔥 thanks for stopping by.

This was supposed to be a second piece to trauma and exercise, however that's not gonna happen today, as I accidentally deleted the wrong doc,smh 🤷‍♀️. So...

Today's check in is on dealing with trauma through expressive writing.

But first the icebreaker of the day.

What’s the last thing that made you laugh?

Expressive writing is a form of writing therapy developed primarily by James W. Pennebaker in the late 1980s. The seminal expressive writing study instructed participants in the experimental group to write about a 'past trauma', expressing their very deepest thoughts and feelings surrounding it.

Expressive writing is a way to literally take control of your own story. Life story writers record an account of their tough life events and tell emotional truths from their experiences. Healing from emotional trauma starts with telling your story. Doing so is an emotional experience, but as you continue to explore and express your story in different ways, you’ll find that your story no longer sparks the same emotional and behavioral reactions.

By writing, you put some structure and organization to anxious feelings.

Writing is no stranger to therapy. For years, practitioners have used logs, questionnaires, journals and other writing forms to help people heal from stresses and traumas.

an intensive research review published in 1998 in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology (Vol. 66, No. 1), suggests that writing does make a difference.

In order to tap writing's healing power, people must use it to better understand and learn from their emotions It helps you to get past them. After all, writing's power to heal lies not in pen and paper, but in the mind of the writer,

The act of thinking about an experience, as well as expressing emotions, important. In this way, writing helps people to organize thoughts and give meaning to a traumatic experience. Or the process of writing may enable them to learn to better regulate their emotions

.Even if you don’t consider yourself a writer, the process of writing can help you to cope with and process past events, diffuse emotionally-charged memories, gain insight into your history, and transform and redefine your future. Telling your own stories will allow you to let them go and free yourself.

Kinds of Expressive Writing

Diaries and journals.

Autobiographies or memoirs.

Personal writings and observations.

Personal values and beliefs.

Personal songs and poems.

Opinion or thought pieces.

Question 1: Do you write? If yes, what do you like to write?

Question 2: if you do write thoughts and emotions,What do you think of writing your thoughts and emotions down, do you find it helpful?

As always these questions are optional, feel free to say hi or drop off a hug or 2.

@Fireskye13 Hey Skye - How are you? This is a really awesome post.

Words have such power don't they? Like that saying the pen is mightier than the sword.

I used to write more. Here - but as time started going by I've allowed myself to get quieter and quieter until I hardly write at all. You know - it starts small I guess - someone makes a comment or Idk - maybe you feel alittle self conscious about what you're talking about. Anxiety says one thing and depression says another. Alot of times it's like I have a gag order and I'm just not allowed to talk about things. I have a pretty brutal persecutor - tbh - and it messes up alot of things - sorry - got off track lol

Yes writing is a really good way to release somethings - instead of holding it all inside and being silent. I do like to write - i did - I'd like to get that back. I used to journal more - it got the nonsense out of my head - some of it anyway - seemed to keep the thoughts more managable

Writing is helpful - anything that helps you express yourself. That's a good thing. It does help process things - sometimes if you write it down and then re-read it helps you understand things better

I like your quotes :)

Thank you for this checkin Skye - I need to fight harder I think to get my words back *just wish I knew why that makes me nervous lol* Sorry if none of this makes sense lol

I'll leave this in case anyone needs any

@Fireskye13

Question 1: Do you write? If yes, what do you like to write?

I like to write poetry. It helps me express what I'm feeling and the thoughts that are in my head.

Question 2: if you do write thoughts and emotions,What do you think of writing your thoughts and emotions down, do you find it helpful?

It is helpful. I find that if I can get the thoughts out it helps take them away at least for a little awhile.

Thanks for the great check-in.

Writing is so nice. I don't keep a journal, I don't like to write about myself. I tried once to write my own biography but remembering things was unpleasant for me, so I quit.

I prefer poetry and fantasy now. But I haven't been writing too much lately. I hope I can go back to my writing soon.

Question 1: Do you write? If yes, what do you like to write? Yes, I do. Last year alone I broke a record and went through three diaries/journals. I usually write about my daily life and inner thoughts.

Question 2: if you do write thoughts and emotions,What do you think of writing your thoughts and emotions down, do you find it helpful? Yes, and I look back and I am usually in awe.
