Am I over reacting?

This is my first time talking about This, but I don't know what to do any more. I was in a relationship with my ex for 4 years, we broke up a year ago, he used to put his hands on me when he was drunk, when he was sober he was mentally cruel. I read about other people in the same situation And what they've been through and I feel like I'm over reacting, but I've recently got close to a guy and had to end it because im so scared of it happening again, I haven't told my family because im scared they'll be mad at me for not telling them sooner, I've told my friends but I don't think they understand what I'm feeling, I'm completely lost, I feel broken
