27, starting over with nothing, and trying not to fall apart
Hi everyone. I've never written something like this publicly before. I've always been the person who handles things alone, puts on a brave face, and keeps moving. But I'm running out of the ability to do that and I think I need to just... say it all somewhere. Even if no one reads it. Even if it just sits here. I need someone, anyone, to know what this feels like.
Where I am right now--
I'm 27. I have a Master's degree. On paper, that sounds like I should be doing fine. I'm not.
I'm currently jobless. I have an education loan of 61 lakhs (that's roughly $73,000 USD for those unfamiliar with Indian currency). I'm about to move back to India after living in the US for my studies, and I'm going to be staying in a small village in Goa with my boyfriend while I prepare for jobs. He will be covering all the expenses. I have almost no money of my own.
I have no relationship with my parents. I cut them off because the relationship was causing me more harm than good. I've also cut off every other person who was toxic, unsupportive, or just not good for me. Which sounds brave and empowering in theory. In practice, it has left me with exactly one person in my life, my boyfriend. That's it. That's my entire support system. One person.
I am terrified.
How I got here--
From 2021 to now, my life has been a series of moves to places where I never fit in. I lived in a suburb near Chennai where I had zero social life. I'm not Tamil, and the community was very insular. I had no one. Then I moved to Arlington, Texas for my Master's. I thought things would be different in the US. They weren't. Arlington is basically a suburb with no real downtown, and the South Asian community there was heavily dominated by one regional group that I wasn't part of. Different country, same isolation. Same feeling of being an outsider with no way in.
And now I'm about to move to a small village in Goa. Another place where the local community is tight-knit and I'll be an outsider. I keep ending up in places where tribalism runs the social scene, and I keep being the one who doesn't belong to any tribe.
The pattern terrifies me because I can see it clearly but I can't seem to break it. Every time I move, I tell myself "this time will be different." It never is. And every time, the isolation gets a little heavier.
What I'm dealing with inside--
I think I might have Complex PTSD. I haven't been officially diagnosed, but when I read about it, it describes my inner world almost perfectly. Here's what my daily experience is like:
I need validation constantly. Not in a "please compliment me" way. In a deep, desperate, "please tell me I'm not invisible and that my existence matters" way. When I don't get it, I don't just feel sad. I feel like I'm disappearing. Like I don't exist unless someone acknowledges me. It's exhausting, for me and for anyone close to me.
I can't stick with things. I start books, courses, study plans, and I'm great at the beginning. Excited, focused, motivated. Then I hit the middle, where progress is slow and invisible, and something in me just... shuts off. I stop. Every time. Not because I don't care. Because my brain tells me "this will never end, this won't lead anywhere, just like everything else." And I believe it, even though I know it's not rational.
My emotions hijack everything. If my boyfriend says something hurtful, I can't study for days. If I get a job rejection, I don't just feel disappointed, I feel like it confirms everything I've ever feared about myself. One bad interaction can derail an entire week. I know this isn't normal. I know most people can compartmentalize. I can't. My emotions don't have a dimmer switch. They have an on/off switch, and "on" means full blast.
I tolerate terrible things from people but can't tolerate boredom. This one confuses me the most. I can stay in a bad relationship or a toxic friendship for years. But I can't sit with a textbook for two hours without wanting to crawl out of my skin. I've realized it's because chaos feels familiar to me. Bad relationships feel like "home" because that's what I grew up with. But peace? Quiet? Calm, sustained effort? My body literally doesn't know what to do with that. Safety feels like a threat because it's unfamiliar.
I feel like time is running out. I'm only 27, but I feel like I've already failed. I've never earned more than a modest salary. People my age are settled in careers, buying homes, building lives. I'm starting from zero. Again. I know logically that 27 is young. But my body feels like it's 47. The exhaustion is not physical. It's the exhaustion of having been in survival mode for years without a single period of genuine safety or rest.
The loneliest part--
I go to the gym. I go out. I talk to people. I do all the "right" things. And none of it helps because I'm performing wellness, not experiencing it. Every conversation I have, I'm wearing a mask. I smile, I make small talk, I seem fine. But inside I'm screaming. And the gap between how I look and how I feel is itself a source of pain, because every successful social interaction where I hid my real feelings is just more evidence that nobody actually knows me.
I don't share my real feelings with anyone because I'm terrified of being judged. And honestly? The few times I've tried, I was judged. So the fear isn't irrational. It's learned. I learned that vulnerability is punished, not rewarded. And now I'm stuck in a system where I hide everything, never get judged, never get supported, feel completely alone, and conclude that nobody could ever handle the real me.
I even tried therapy. My therapist made me feel judged instead of understood. She wanted me to accept that my behavior was "wrong" before she'd explore why I did it. I already knew it was wrong. What I needed was to understand the pattern underneath so I could change it. She dismissed my self-awareness as "stuff from the internet." So I'm looking for a new therapist now. But in the meantime, I'm here.
What I'm trying to do--
I have a 6-month plan. Move to Goa, study intensively for data science and analytics roles, apply for jobs, and try to get hired at a salary that lets me start repaying my loan and finally, finally, have some financial independence and the ability to make choices about my own life.
I have a toolkit of emotional regulation strategies. I have a daily study schedule. I have emergency protocols for when I spiral. I'm trying to build something from nothing, with no safety net, no family support, and one relationship that I'm not even sure will survive the pressure.
I'm writing all of this here because I need it to exist somewhere outside my own head. I need proof that I said these things and the world didn't end. I need to practice being honest about my pain in a space where I might not be judged for it.
What I need from this community--
I'm not looking for solutions. I have a plan. What I need is to not be alone in this. If you've felt like this, like you're rebuilding your life from rubble while your brain actively tries to sabotage you, I would love to hear that I'm not the only one. I would love to hear that it gets better. Not in a "just think positive" way. In a "I've been where you are and I survived it" way.
If you've dealt with Complex PTSD, anxious attachment, or the particular loneliness of having cut off your family and finding yourself with no one, I would really appreciate hearing your experience. Not advice. Just... your story. So I feel less alone in mine.
Thank you for reading this. It means more than you know.
