Dissociation Poem
I’ve been working through some things with my therapist and writing for years. This is about overthinking, dissociation and strange black out moments I’ve had.
Untethered.
My mind it swells
like a balloon stretched too thin.
Each memory another breath of air.
Each recollection pulling at my seams.
I rise with the weight of them, untethered,
drifting further from the ground.
With every thought I cannot hold.
Until suddenly, the string
slips from my fingers.
I watch myself float away.
A body untethered from its bones.
A ghost carried by the very things
I am trying to forget.
Please…Deflate my mind.
Let the air escape.
Let every memory fall silent.
But I am afraid of what remains.
When the last breath leaves me,
and there is nothing left to fill me,
I must face the hollow
that was there all along.
