What song speaks to your experience?
Trigger Warning: Abuse (DV and Parental)
I was driving home from my mat Pilates class (FYI I can’t do any of it) and was listening to my liked songs on Spotify like I usually do. This was not even an hour ago. In the middle of “Because of You” by Kelly Clarkson something just clicked. The entire time I thought this song was about an abusive PARTNER but it’s actually about surviving childhood with a overdependent/broken PARENT. I was mind blown and it instantly hit that much harder. It’s crazy how you can put your childhood traumas in the back burner until something like this brings out a little (or a lot of it) right back, front and center. It really made me pause and think for a moment of how much I’ve overcome and I am thankful for getting this far (despite how hard I am on myself).
Okay, so what’s the point of this post? I want to ask you fellow listeners and members, what song have you listened to recently that just spoke to you on a deeper level? Did it help or do you feel like it made things worse? Let’s get this convo going. 🫶
I have recently found a song by Alice in chains. It's called nut shell. It speaks to me because of the lyrics "we chase misprinted lies" and also the lyrics "and yet I fight this battle all alone, no one to cry too no place to call home".
But the song really resonates with me because of the lyrics
@yukieq
I looked up the lyrics. Do you still relate to the song or is it something you used to relate to?
@LovelyKittyCat After my recent breakup, I came across the song 'The Greatest' by Billie Eilish. The lyrics, 'I loved you, and I still do, just wanted passion from you, just wanted what I gave you,' resonated deeply with me because they perfectly capture how I feel."
That’s such a powerful moment of realization, and I can totally relate to how music can trigger deep emotions and memories. I’ve been exploring ways to support my mental well-being as well, and something that has helped me is incorporating mindfulness and exercise into my routine. I found BetterMe, which offers a mix of exercises and mental health resources. Here’s an article that explains some of what they offer: BetterMe: Is it free?.
@LovelyKittyCat
this song ( Because of you) will play at work sometimes and I hate it! According to the music video it’s a DV situation, where as my experience was from birth to mid/late 20s. I try to block it out when it plays, but I can’t & it definitely creates Emotional flashbacks. I used to like the song, because the artists have amazing voices, I didn’t know at the time I also liked it because I could relate to it.
