Can Almost Drowning Cause Trauma?
So, when I was little, probably not older than 6, I almost drowned.
We had a pool in our front yard and I was in a floating thingy.
Everyone else was going inside and I was left in the pool. It was then I started to kind of tip over. I was halfway in the water before my cousin got me out of there. Even then I'm pretty sure all I got was an, "Are you okay?" from him. I don't remember my parents ever asking me if I was okay though. Even when I bring it up all these years later (I'm 16 now) my mom tells me that I didn't almost drown, but I can still clearly feel what it was like at the moment.
I can still feel myself back at the time and see through my eyes of what happened and feel the same fears that I did. I can almost feel the water too. While I don't get random flashbacks of it, I do get them whenever I think about it.
I was wondering if any of this could cause trauma or anything of the sort. And could it possibly explain why I don't really trust my parents anymore? Because I don't think it's just because I'm a teenager.
Any help in helping me figure this out would be wonderful, thanks in advance.
@violetdragonuke Hey thanks for your post violet. From what you wrote it sounds as if you went through a really traumatic experience and the fact that all this time on, it still affects you, perhaps where as you say you dont have the trust in your parents that you would like, its could be very well the case, that this trauma is affecting you now. How do you feel about what happened? It sounds from your post that you parents have kind of invalidated your experience or memory of what you can remember about the incident?? How do you feel around water now, or pools or any kind? Would you say this has impacted on you all these years later?

Whenever I think about it I get scared like I'm back in the moment.
I'm generally fine with water though I have trouble with swimming and get nervous about floating on my back and can only do it in shallow water and that's only occasionally. And I can't don't really trust those floating inflatable rafts.
I don't like water on my face either, so maybe that's connected to it?
I'd say because of all of this it has indeed affected me.
