The Night I lost my Mind (poem)
You took me out that night
and tore me down until
there was nothing left but fright.
"If you don't want to listen I will
let you out of the car," you promised,
"but you won't have a home anymore"
I asked you to pull over, but my request you dismissed.
"I'd like to throw you off this bridge." The words you slur,
were the worst you could say.
Daddy, what did I do to make you hate me this way?
Eyes red with anger, the smell of Bud Light
on your breath, and your cheap cigarette smoke penetrated
the air of the Mercury Mystique,
memories of that car now tainted.
From your mouth the words kept flowing
like sewage into the river. The smelled like s***
contaminating my self-esteem, which was no longer glowing
A bit went by, you finally stopped driving, but you weren't done
berating your little girl. Trees surrounding us, a river
in front of us, there was no where for me to run.
Terrified and scared, you walked toward the darkness, I followed after
you begging you to stop. I felt the eyes in the trees watching,
waiting for you to leave me alone so they could get me too.
I was ready for it all to stop. When I saw you
standing by the river my only urge was to push you in and go in after
you. Inst3ead I fell to the ground and screamed
like hell, hoping someone could hear me.
As soon as I accepted I might not make it home that night, to
my surprise a police officer came to my rescue.
Never in my life had I felt such relief. I called for a ride and let you
walk your drunk self home. I didn't have a clue
if I still had a place to live, but you got what you deserved
and I was happy to be free.
This is a beautifully written poem! Did you write it yourself?
@Emily619
Yeah. I wrote it a few years ago in a creative writing class in college. We had to write a poem based on a "flash bulb" memory and this is one of the most intrusive memories I have. It happened about 10 years ago. This event has made me so hypervigilent about having a cell phone with me where ever I go because I don't want to be stuck without being able to call for help (my phone battery was dead).
Last month I was admitted to the hospital (medical hospital because the psych hospitals don't want to deal with me anymore) and they don't allow you to have your phone if you're on 1-1 and the person in the ER said I could have my phone when I got upstairs, so when I couldn't have my phone to even get phone numbers I literally panicked and barricaded myself in a corner and hid under a blanket and cried. Like I was somewhere safe, but not having access to call someone I knew to bring me stuff I needed made me panic.
