A visualisation exercise for getting in touch with your inner child
Ways of getting in touch with your inner child
SPEAK TO YOUR INNER CHILD.
Acknowledge your inner child and let it know that youre there for them. Treat them with kindness and respect. Some self-nurturing things you could say to your inner child include, for example:
I love you.
I hear you.
Im sorry.
Thank you.
I forgive you.
Make a habit of talking to your inner child. You could try communicating through journal work by asking your inner child a question, then writing down the response.
One of the most powerful ways to reconnect with your inner child to heal childhood traumas, is through an inner journey. This can be done with meditation or through visualization.
Before attempting to do these kind of journeys, its important that you first gain the trust of your inner child through the previous activities, perhaps activities that a therapist can support you with. Once you have developed a strong connection to your inner child, you can then ask them to reveal what earlier life circumstances created the trauma youre struggling with today.
HOW TO DO A VISUALIZATION JOURNEY:
A active way to connect with your inner child and earlier life traumas is through visualization. Always ensure you feel safe enough to try this exercise and ensure you have all you need in place to feel safe.
To connect with your inner child through visualization, firstly you must create a safe place. To do this, visualise somewhere you feel safe, this could be a beautiful garden, a safe play room full of beanbags, an island, or any type of place in which you feel safe, empowered and whole. After entering your safe place, you can then invite your inner child to speak with you.
Here are a few steps:
Relax, close your eyes and breathe deeply.
Imagine youre walking down a staircase or along a path, or through a forest walk.
Once you have come to the bottom of the staircase, or the end of of the path, you reach your safe place. In this place you feel strong, safe and supported.
Spend a bit of time in your safe place. Soak it in. What does it look like, smell like and sound like? What can you smell? Is it hot, cold or just comfortable temperature wise?
After you have acquainted yourself with your safe place, imagine that your younger self has entered, perhaps through a door or waterfall, through a bush or from the sea.
Hug your younger self and make them feel welcomed, at home, safe.
When youre ready, ask your inner child your question, e.g. When was the first time you/I felt sad or scared? You might like to phrase the question in child terminology.
Await their response.
Make sure you hug them, thank them, and tell them how much they mean to you.
Say goodbye to them.
Leave your safer place and walk back up the staircase, along the path.
Return to normal consciousness.
These are very basic steps, but they provide a good outline of how to perform an inner child visualization journey.
As children we perceived the world very differently from our adult selves. Because of this, many of the things we presently assume never hurt us as children may have left deep scars. This is why its important to never make assumptions about your inner child.
Through inner child work, you can learn to grieve and begin to heal

I'm very interested in learning more about connecting to my inner children. Writing the letter was very powerful. I'm going to try this visualization to spend time with a younger me. Writing questions and answering sounds interesting. Can you tell me more?
@MKJart You did an amazing thing sharing your letter to your inner child and I felt really priviledged you decided to share it. I am going to give you a link about writing and talking to your inner child that kind of sums up the things I would say and perhaps things you may wish to ask or write. It would be really good to hear your feedback on this. https://www.acaconvention.org/pdf/Inner_Child_Writing_by_Michele.pdf

Hi Rain,
I've been doing this inner child writing with opposite hands. It's amazing what I'm find out about little me. Sometimes painful, but overall very healing. I wanted to say thank you.
Mary
@MKJart You are very welcome :) I did debate posting this for as you say it can be very painful but also very healing. But I decided to go with it for those of you who wished to give it a go. What have you found out about you doing this? Its very powerful isnt it, especially when trying the opposing hands whilst giving this a go
Perhaps in time I will put up some new things to try out under this kind of heading in the forums
@MKJart Also this link you may find useful

Thanks, I look forward to trying the writing exercise with alternating hands.
