CPTSD: From Surviving to Thriving

Hey all,

I borrowed this thread title from Pete Walker's excellent book on the subject.

My journey can be summed up as having CPTSD engendered within me by two very emotionally immature parents who had rough upbringings themselves. However, neither of my parents were seemingly willing (or able) to put the work in to break the chain(s) of generational familial trauma.

Their combined actions (and inactions) has had a cascade effect on myself and my two sisters.

Anyway, all this is to say that I have spent the majority of my 30s basically trying to heal from (and roll back as much as I can) having a clinically bad childhood. And although I've made great progress, it's hard not to sometimes get sucked in with the ups-and-downs as well as the overwhelming feeling of how much was taken and from so early on.

That said, I also have to realize that I've learned things about myself, learned to have empathy for myself (and others), and have learned that sometimes it's okay to throw out the book of everything you thought you knew and to start over.

@sereneSunset26 Beautifully put. I'm so sorry to hear that you've had a traumatic childhood. In some ways, I can relate awfully lot to the things you just pointed out above. Here at Cups, we're always supporting one another and we'd be more than happy to welcome us as part of our big family too! Healing takes time, and we're all proud of you for staying strong even after having to go through so much. You got this, we've got you ❤️
