Love and trauma
I experienced possibly most forms of trauma during my childhood and for whatever reason, I've been able to keep going without much of an issue. I have my problems, like everyone else, but nothing in particular that could be directly tied back to my childhood.
But then I met a therapist, 2 years ago. I started seeing them for insomnia. I felt like we hit it off almost immediately. They were funny and intelligent. The things they said made me feel safe and cared for. It became easier and easier to open up about things I never discussed with anyone before.
I allowed myself to become fully vulnerable after a while. I felt naked but never in a bad way. I felt safe with them.
And I fell so madly in love with this therapist. Telling them this was one of the hardest things I ever had to do. But they were kind and professional and told me what I was experiencing was "transference". For anyone who is unaware of what that is, it's the redirection of feelings from another point in the clients life, being projected onto the therapist (please feel free to correct me if I'm not completely correct).
All I knew is that I was in love and believed I've never met someone who could be a better match for me.
But for whatever reason, this therapist never helped me with the underlying reason for the transference. That's an important step in therapy, and it was never taken. My feelings of love developed into an obsession which pushed me to want to terminate therapy early out of fear, anger and anxiety.
Weeks prior to termination I explained this obsession with the therapist and they didn't seem too concerned. Well, that was my impression. We discussed me finding a new therapist but that idea tapered off pretty quickly and we continued, without touching on the subject of my obsession.
So I pushed for a termination. The therapist agreed. I tried backing down last minute because of how overwhelmingly terrified I became. The therapist declined and told me therapy was over. They told me I'm fine, and stronger than I may think.
I felt beyond humiliated for being denied in my moment of fear. But I persisted with the quick termination and left, utterly petrified.
What followed after termination is something I cannot be completely sure of. Some therapists say it's PTSD, others say it's a mental breakdown. All I know is, I lost my ability to cope in this world. It was like all the trauma that had been simmering at the surface (transference), finally erupted and invaded my life. I became suicidal, I disassociated, I hurt myself and started doing drugs and drinking just to get through my day. I vomited often out of the sheer anger and confusion I felt over what was happening to me. The person I loved, and believed cared for me was gone and I couldn't understand why. I lost a ton of weight and started doing dangerous things. I went looking for fights and I carried weapons with me. I never found what I was looking for, thankfully.
I tried reaching out to this therapist but they have been ignoring me. They refuse to answer my emails and that only increased the agony I was experiencing. I feel so lost in this world. I feel like I'm sharing my body with other people, if that makes any sense. It's like the emotions I had experienced in my childhood have taken shape inside of me and can control me to a certain degree.
It's been 6 months since termination and I can say I have improved. I don't self harm or think of suicide anymore. I quit drinking, smoking and pills. I'm very slowly moving into a better direction. But I feel like I'm moving through mud. I get weighed down so easily with the overwhelming depression I have been carrying with me. I want to forgive and move on, but my trauma is effecting that progress. I feel dirty and violated. I trusted this therapist to take care of me and to help me but instead they allowed so much damage and my life was threatened. And they can't even reach out to apologize or to show any form of regret for their actions. It's agonizing to think that they feel I'm a throw-away human. I feel like a toy they broke so they tossed me away and went to play with another.
I've tried to see other therapists but I constantly argue with them or ghost them without warning. I don't trust therapists and I'm far from ready to open up to another one. So that means I'm handling my mental health all on my own. I'm confused most of the time and scared out of my wits. But I have to be persistent, that is the only thing to do.
I've thought about reporting this therapist for unprofessionalism, negligence and abandonment. But the worst part of what I've been experiencing is that I'm still deeply in love with them. I wonder if they're happy and safe. And I don't want to harm them by reporting them. I know it's super messed up, and I have a lot more healing to experience.
The therapists I did give a small chance to, all tried urging me to report this therapist. Some therapists became visibly upset at my previous therapists actions. Some called my previous therapists names like "narcissist", "motherf---er", "sociopath". One outright didn't believe my previous therapist was ignoring my emails. She outright said I probably have the wrong email address or they're not receiving them. They couldn't understand why a therapist would ignore a client in dire need.
I just want to feel better and move on with my life. I now have more issues than I did when I started therapy. I just want to feel okay again. 😞

Hello again !
"Transference" can become very powerful.
A well-trained Therapist should be able to deal with that, in the service of advancing the treatment.
I understand that you are not as interested in denouncing the transgression of the code of conduct (HERE for the US, similar for other countries) as getting over it and moving forward.
In my personal opinion, on top of "transference" (as defined by Sigmund Freud, say), we can establish an emotional attachment to our therapist, similar to that we would have with a very close friend to which we tell our deepest feelings and experiences, things we would not tell anybody else.
Moreover, we can fall in love with anybody we get very close to, and, for some reason, we strongly appreciate their personality, which makes us attracted to them.
So you can experience "just healthy transference" with a therapist, and fall deeply in love with another.
Most therapists, in my experience, are well-trained, professional, and caring people. You had the bad luck to fall into the hands of one attractive and charismatic, but insensitive and unprofessional.
Don't give up on Therapy because of the bad experience you had.
I wish you that, as you say, you "move on with your life" and walk the path "to feel okay again."
And I hope you find in this Community some support in this healing journey.
Keep in touch.
All the best,
Marcelo.

I don't want to give up on therapy but I don't have much of a choice in the matter. I've been plagued with what feels like split personalities. I do not have other personalities, but I have incredibly powerful and random emotions that take over my perception of reality. It's hard to catch when I'm going through these moments, but I'm getting better at recognizing when it happens.
It's solitary emotions/ideas that are so powerful they take precedent over all my other feelings. For instance, I can randomly experience rage that comes out of nowhere and it's the only thing I can feel until the moment passes. These moments can last for a few minutes, hours or even days. But it's only one "feeling" at a time that I experience in such a profound way. Fear, rage, sadness, confusion...etc.
So because I'm experiencing these moments of extreme emotions, I tend to make choices I wouldn't normally make under normal circumstances. This is why I'm leaving therapy prematurely, and I'm stuck in this cycle for the time being. All I can really do is focus on self care and educate myself as much as possible.
I have contacted the previous therapist and asked them for help and I was ignored. It’s as if my brain cannot process this part of the trauma. I’m unable to understand the “why”, and that’s something that’s really scaring me. I’ve deluded myself into pretending a lot that’s happened, didn’t really happen. When I try to conceive reality, I’m met with a brick wall in my mind. I cannot mentally get past why I was/am treated this way. But it’s truly the most agonizing pain I’ve ever experienced in my life.

I see as a valuable achievement, that you have identified with such precision the nature of your emotional cycle, and that you are aware of it all, as it happens.
Regarding the "Why" question, I would suggest trying to let it go. Accept that you will never know. Try to live with that. Do not continue asking.
Catch yourself asking "Why ?" and tell yourself "Stop with that !".
I know that it is much easier said than done.
But, as you imply, it is crucial that you get past that "Why" that torments you so much.
There are many human behaviors that don't have any logical explanation. Not in terms of egotism, self-interest, or even as a desire to hurt another person.
They could be totally illogical, irrational, absurd, nonsense, random, without any intention or goal.
In these situations, asking "Why" is pointing to nowhere.
Maybe if you try to accept this, little by little you could get out of the emotional trap posed by this maddening question without any answer.
Does it make sense ?
Please let me know your thoughts about this.
I send you a big hug, wishing you feel better.
All the best,
Marcelo

The link doesn't work, could you please share it again?

Yeah, it's clear he was unethical in a few ways. I struggle with determining if I should report him or not. And it's not just for him, but me as well. It feels way too stressful to want to put myself through. But then again, he gets to live his life completely unscathed with no repercussions for his actions. I've suffered a long time because of him. But I feel like that energy should be spent on my own well-being and not on seeking vengeance.

Hey, I just wanted to say, I read your story and I just wanted to say that I'm very sorry that you went through that and you sound very strong for being where you are now and pushing on. I have a similar though not quite the same experience - the last therapist I saw was a person I felt safe with and it all went down into the mud because of various happenings. Like you at the end it was pure misery and every email they send (off-hand, I don't think they felt comfortable with me as client, which hurts me too) send me in states ranging from idealization to mass anxiety thinking they do not want me around. My relationship with the therapy lasted only 8 months and I don't think I got to the same amount of depth, but I can relate to your story, even if it is not fully the same.
I also want to say to you to stay strong and carry on even if it is so hard! I cannot imagine what the experience you describe did to you, such a breach of trust (and beyond). But you sound wise and understanding of what you are going through and those are all very cherisheable traits to have. I really hope you will find someone you can trust again - I do believe it is possible to find such people, it just requires a readiness on our part (and you are still healing as you say, a process that never deserves to be rushed!) and time and just that bit of luck of running into that individual that will understand us and help us. I'm hoping for all the best of you and that you will find happeness in life, but I have faith that with your knowledge and wisdom you will get there! All the best.
Dear creative, I am soooo very sorry to hear your experience. I have to tell you I had similar experience with a different type of therapist and it's taken me 3 years to come to terms with it. I was lucky I found a good therapist who understands my transference problem and I have CPTSD because of it , I have childhood abuse trauma too. I completely understand what happened to you and I felt exactly the same way. My emotions were all over the place , i was numb, promiscuous and suicidaIl . I have to say I wouldn't be here without therapy, meds and 7cups. I want you to know what happened to you has happened to me and worse I'm afraid. Your not alone and btw you are not at fault in any way. I felt like it was my fault in some way. I had to go over exactly what happened in detail and forgive to get past what happened. I won't ever be the same but I am getting better, it's slow progress and I cannot work because of my CPTSD . I wanted to reach out to you let you know your not alone and I pray for your healing. ABB
