Firstly I would like to thank everyone who took part in this question/poll on PTSD and Stigma/Discrimination. Your participation is greatly appreciated :)
Okay so the results of our first Poll here on 7 cups for PTSD related issues is as follows:
Have you ever experienced stigma or discrimination because of having PTSD?
62.5% of you said you had not encountered any discrimination/stigma as a result of your PTSD
25% of you had encountered some form of stigma or discrimination as a result of PTSD
12.5 of you answered that you did not know or were unsure.
Reducing the stigma of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is something that we all can, and should, help in doing. If you are reading this post, then its probably because you, or someone close to you, suffers from PTSD or you have an interest in how PTSD may affect others. Some people sadly, are familiar with PTSD and the associated stigma and discrimination that can occur. Its great to see that for the majority of our members, they have not had to experience this. Stigma and discrimination can have deterimental effects on those who do encounter it. The good news is, there are things that we all can do to help reduce the stigmatization of PTSD sufferers. Awareness of PTSD, its causes and its treatments etc is one way. Becoming informed is another. There are various ways to try and reduce the stigma and discrimination people may face.
Stigma is when people have negative beliefs, attitudes, or views about a person who belongs to a certain group. Often, those beliefs lead to prejudice or discrimination of the members of that group.
It is believed that three-out-of-four people with PTSD and associated mental health issues have experienced stigma. For people who have been diagnosed with PTSD, the stigmatization of the disorder says that they are weak, crazy, angry, violent, and damaged. Even though those things arent accurate, they can cause feelings of shame, worthlessness, and hopelessness for individuals with PTSD, and they can also prevent people from seeking information and treatment.
It is often thought that stigmatising someone or discriminating against them often arises out of ignorance and fear and fear comes from not understanding.
By working together and raising awareness we can reduce the stigma of PTSD. What are some ways you can join in the battle?
Please watch out for our next question/poll soon to be posted in the ptsd forum for those who would like to take part. Thank you guys :)

Hey there. I love this so much omg, I'd be glad to take part/help out in any way that I can! May I ask if you guys done a post on what exactly PTSD is, preferably from the perspective of someone who's going through it as well as someone who's overcome it? Perhaps that'd allow us others to gain some insight in the matter, rather than just reading what's around 7Cups or on the web. Just a suggestion, though :)
@windflowers Hey there, yes there are some threads in the PTSD section on the forum on PTSD/Complex PTSD if you would like to take a look and hopefully this may be useful to you. I am also copying this link to someone who wanted to give others hope from breaking free of PTSD, again from our ptsd forum threads.
@windflowers We are also looking for members at the moment who would love to join our traumatic experiences community as forum members to contribute to getting the forums active and who would be interested in seeing this community develop a sub community. If anyone is interested the application the link is :
