Thoughtful Thursday: self-mastery through the management of trauma

Hey all,

So I'm pretty sure we can all agree that life can, will, and does throw a whole bunch of stuff at us for our entire lives. And for some of us, our introduction into this came through (and as soon as) our births as well as our introduction in our families.

With the benefit of years of therapeutic hindsight, I feel like I can now say that having pick up the pieces that two emotionally immature parents left me has led to at least some degree of self-mastery for me.

To be clear, I say self-mastery not in the context of a finished goal, but an on-going process of self-refinement and purification. I've talked about it a lot on here, but seriously, the mindfulness needed to supersede and override crappy childhood programming really *does* lead to an enhanced sense of introspection.

I never would have guessed that I would learn things about myself to this degree. I really thought that overcoming trauma, programming, and legacies, was just that--overcoming. But it turns out that that actual process of overcoming is what seemingly unlocks the ability for all of us to truly get know ourselves on the deepest levels possible.
