emotional flashbacks & making meaning
I have cptsd from several (in number and types) of childhood abuse. I've been in therapy on and off for years but consistently on for the past 3 years. I've done talk therapy, I'm on meds, and have done EMDR (which was the most helpful). But after all that and all the progress I've made, one nightmare can put me in an emotional flashback and downward depression spiral all day (or until I'm able to do what I need to to re-regulate). It just feels so unfair that I am still suffering to this day when I did nothing to deserve what happened to me in the first place. And with all the injustices happening to people everyday, I just don't understand this world we live in and how someone can be so cruel and inflict such harm on another human being. I'm not religious at all (one of my abusers was recommended to my family for childcare by the church) but for anyone who is- do your religious beliefs help you make sense of the evil between people?
@perpetualout2lunch
Some things in life in this real world are totally unjust and unacceptable. The things you mention or imply are totally, absolutely unacceptable and unjust. They lack any meaning or justification.
We try to live the best we can with the consequences of things that happened to ourselves, for example, because we had the immense bad luck of having been cruelly mistreated as small children.
Maybe some meaning could be found in the sense of recognizing and coming to terms with the fact that those are the cards we were given, and our challenge is playing the best we can with these cards. Our merit, and the measure of our success in life, is how well we play these cards, even if they are very, very bad.
Also, appreciate that we are valuable, even sacred beings. We deserve respect, care, love, and to live in peace.
We hope that through therapy, coping techniques, making significant connections like those possible in this caring, humane community, we can improve significantly from our base situation, and enjoy moments of peace and happiness.
I am not religious either, so I can't give any opinion from that standpoint.
I wish these thoughts contribute a tiny bit to a reflection on finding meaning in life in the middle of so much injustice and cruelty.
All the best !
Marcelo.
Dear perpetual, well said!!!... I am so sorry for any suffering you've dealt with at the hands of those supposed to protect you. I too am trying to recover from many abuses starting at age 2 all the way up to 50 and trying to heal from CPTSD. It has been an uphill battle for sure. I've been in therapy/ meds 3 years now and on and off the emotional rollercoaster. The part that's the hardest is you never know when something unexpected will send you off the little bit of stability you've worked so hard for. I do believe God has a plan for my pain , maybe there's something for me to do with it to help others who suffer. This type of suffering needs experience behind it to help ppl . Maybe that's my purpose idk. Still trying to figure it all out. Best to you, ABB
@perpetualout2lunch I'm so sorry for the abuse you suffered, in particular the way it has left you questioning the reason for all the injustices, and reason for your own suffering. I too (CPTSD from 5 years of childhood sexual abuse from a teacher of mine) question why, why it's fair, what God's plan is/was, and particularly of late it's made me much less prepared to pray, to engage at church, as I feel like a fraud. But I do still believe, and I still think that there is a wider 'picture', a reason for the way the world can appear totally imbalanced against the weak, the vulnerable and the young. Are we supposed to understand this? Not necessarily, but we can try! I don't believe that God is unloving, but like you, don't have any answers as to why there are some really evil people out there. I'm also firmly of the opinion that karma will catch up with them at some point, even if it's when they're judged at the 'pearly gates'! Having endured my abuse in a Catholic school, I get where you're coming from, and can only reassure you that the goodness in the person you are today does rebalance some of the evil in the world we live in. Take good care of yourself. Grits
