trauma produces actual physiological changes

Research from these new disciplines has revealed that trauma produces actual physiological changes, including a recalibration of the brain’s alarm system, an increase in stress hormone activity, and alterations in the system that filters relevant information from irrelevant. We now know that trauma compromises the brain area that communicates the physical, embodied feeling of being alive. These changes explain why traumatized individuals become hypervigilant to threat at the expense of spontaneously engaging in their day-to-day lives. They also help us understand why traumatized people so often keep repeating the same problems and have such trouble learning from experience. We now know that their behaviors are not the result of moral failings or signs of lack of willpower or bad character—they are caused by actual changes in the brain.

@schismatic - "We now know that trauma compromises the brain area that communicates the physical, embodied feeling of being alive"

It's bitterly validating hearing that what my body has felt "not being alive" is something that's been documented. I hope I will have the opportunity to read more about this someday.

Didi’t know da correct section to post this in. Bein’ it involves trauma I chose here. Hope it’s Aight. Anyhow has anyone had things dey enjoyed doing then trauma hit an was like da things Ya once enjoyd is no longer there? For as long as I remember all through high school I had 3 loves an dat was music, reading, an writing. I had already been getting abused by my step father so I became a very heavy reader. I absolutely loved it-it was my life. Music bought me at peace an bought me to another dimension an forgot da negativity going on in my life an writing was da only time I had freedom to express an done some power to voice how I felt. THEN months after I entered college my ex arrived for da first time on da scene. Not knowing at da time he was an alcoholic. I tried to keep up wit my school work but wit him drunk most times an abusive I ended up having to drop out. I done always wanted to return but so far to no avail. I eventually stopped reading, writing an listening to music. All 3 for me was difficult to put any effort an attention to. Thankfully my daughter an avid music lover I eventually got some of da love for music I once had but has never returned to where it once was. Writing da words just doesnt come anymore. When I write I do my own individual unique style poetry I ca;; Pieces. I use to write a lot an now I am lucky if I c’n get down 2 sentences ‘cause da words don’ flow so fluently any more. Reading what do I do I just done no patience to sit or even walk to read a book. I loved reading so much if I had somewhere to go I would take my book an read as I walked to my appointments an now I done a book on hand for da past few years always wanting to pick it up da desire is there but patience an I guess da calming of da mind is my set back. I am able to relax definetly I just can’t get relaxed enough to sit an concentrate on reading a story. How has anyone here done to retrieve things Ya lost an how did Ya get it back.
