Did someone ever experience traumatic amnesia?

Hi during my childhood I have been raped by a relative, I was 8 years old. I could not stand the pain of being raped so my brain just shut down and I had a traumatic amnesia during 5 years or so ( during the time I was still in contact with my rapist ) and even when I remembered it I just wished it was just a nightmare I did or a thing like that until it was confirmed by the rapist himself.. did someone ever experience this kind or thing?

@Bobichou I kind of experienced a similar thing. It was only for a little while though.

I wish I did...but I cpuld never forget anything...unfortunately so I guess amnesia would have been a bit of a bliss...

I am not sure it is a blessing or not. Not knowing why you are so twisted out of shape may stall healing and restoration. Is the repressed memory a psychological defense mechanism because we are not strong enough to handle the trauma, or there is a physiological explanation of memory pathways being blocked in our brain chemistry by the body's adrenal flood or other stress hormones when the event occurs and when trying to recall it?
