Hello, i would like to be called teeth and am 14 years old. Sometime last year i was changing into a shirt i bought and went over to my parents room to show my mom how it fit. I was putting it on as i was walking but was having trouble getting it past my head. i was standing in the doorway with my bra expossed just trying to pull the shirt down. My dad said "what are you doing, showing off your bra?" I keep thinking he might have just been joking and it wasnt a serious comment, so i never talked to him about it but for the rest of the night i kept shaking and crying and thinking i was disgusting and hating the fact that i had a physical body at all. I feel that it dosent really matter because nothing happened to me really, and i keep doubting the experience although i continue to be stressed about it. I would just like to know if this is cause for concern and if so what i might be able to do about it.

Any situation that makes you uncomfortable should be addressed, though I do not think there is enough information here to call it abuse. I do believe though that it is harassment at the very least. I would regardless seek a therapist, someone you really trust (better if they are a mandated reporter if you are a minor). This experience clearly made you very upset, no matter if it was abuse or not, and I believe that talking to someone could help you with your lingering stress. If I may however project my personal experience, for me it was when my offender began using lewd language with me that I finally understood that I was being abused, and my emotional experience was eerily similar. He told me how big my breasts were becoming (I was early teen) and that’s when it all clicked. I was in denial and I simply couldn’t believe he wanted to hurt me, but I basically locked myself in a closet, lying on the floor crying, and wishing I could tear off all my skin. It was after that I began seriously considering the fact that I might be being abused. I would like to reiterate that I could be TOTALLY WRONG, but I would think critically about any other times you felt uncomfortable around your dad.

Sorry to say in my opinion I think you are overreacting a bit but you have a right to your emotions. I’m sure your father meant nothing by it but if it bothers you a lot you need to speak to someone about it. I suggest telling your mother how you feel first then you could discuss it together with your father.
