I feel like a terrible person

My grandfather sexually abused me when I was little from about 6-11 years old and now no one in my family gets to see him. My siblings don't know anything about it, just me and my parents.I feel like I ruined his life and my families lives because what he did to me isn't nearly as bad as some other cases of sexual abuse. I don't even remember much of it because I was so young all I know is that it made me feel gross. I just keep thinking that I overreacted and all of this is a huge mess that I've created.

Hi. I'm so sorry that you feel this way. You are a very good person for not blaming him, whatever his emotions be at the time of the incident. But instead blaming yourself is not the right thing to do. The fact that you are not negatively talkingabout your grandfather is a positive thing. Try to focus this positive energy on thinking exactly what you said here. What happened maybewasn'tthat bad. It might have gotten worse, but you were lucky to not go through anything like that. And this is definitely not a mess you created. You were innocent at that age, and acted normally for any person actually in such a situation. You can't blame yourself for acting normally. As o how he feels, try visiting him once, see how things go. He might be glad to see you and hear something good from you. Give him a glad new year :)

I'm gonna have to disagree with the first poster. You were sexually abused. "It wasn't that bad" doesn't change the fact that it happened and don't think that you made a big deal about it. You protected yourself and now there's no way your siblings could be in the same position. Remember that. You can visit him if you feel comfortable but do not feel like you owe anyone an apology because you were a VICTIM of sexual abuse. Imagine this happening to someone you cared, you'd want them to do something about it, right?
