Do Not Take Things Personally

June 11th, 2017

For whatever reason you are being bullied for, and whatever harsh words or actions have been said or initiated towards you, try not to take it personally. Bullying has to do with problems with the perpetrators of bullying, not the victims. It has to do with them wanting to engage in fulfilling their own motives and desires, for example, to exert power or control, to cause harm, etc.

You certainly didn't deserve the harassment. Nobody deserves bullying, for any reason. Bullying is wrongful, in any circumstance.

Continuously remind yourself of your positive traits, and the supportive people in your life. Focus on all of the positive aspects within your life, and your personal talents and strengths. Whatever a bully has said or done, remind yourself that you are not to blame for their negative behaviour. He or she has made a conscious choice to engage in bullying you, for their own reasons and purposes. It has nothing to do with you.

Stay strong; you will get through this.

@IsabelleJ So well said :) I would like to echo your words, in saying, no one deserves to be bullied and if you are, you are not at fault, you did nothing wrong, and there is nothing wrong with you. Sadly in this life, there are some people who choose to bully for whatever their reasons are, but this is about them, not you. You are unique, you are special and dont let anyone else try and make you believe different :) Keep on being you :)

Thank you. Yes, I feel that continually reminding yourself that there is nothing wrong with you, despite having been bullied, can help one to effectively cope, and to heal from a traumatic experience(s) of bullying.

@IsabelleJ Its a bit like challenging negative messages that someone may hold about themselves, perhaps because others have put them down etc. Sometimes it can help to step outside the situation, and to look at it as an onlooker, from an objective point of view :)

I agree with this. When one has experienced bullying, they may be negatively affected by the harsh treatment and words of others, and may start to believe those negative messages that have been conveyed. But, as you said, looking at things from an objective point of view, one can see that it was not the victim that was in the wrong, but the negative treatment that was amiss. Nobody should blame themselves for anyone else's negative behaviour.
