I don't think there's any one specific reason :P
Some people lie out of self-preservation, that is to save themselves from the consequences of an action, some people like to make themselves look better then another person, some people like as a means of manipulating a group or populace, and some people lie because they are afraid to communicate the truth so they just tell the other person what they want to hear.

Ultimately though, it all comes down to saftey. People like because it makes them feel safe. Because it gives them power over something they can't control.

That's just my two cents however :P
