Established in 1972, Humboldt Recovery Center stands as the largest and oldest residential treatment program on California's North Coast. This licensed and certified facility operates seven home-like residences in safe neighborhoods, providing gender-separated treatment for up to 57 individuals simultaneously. Their approach centers on a therapeutic community model with evidence-based practices to help clients build meaningful drug-free lives. The center features comfortable living environments with private or shared bedrooms, fully equipped kitchens, and common areas complete with television, telephones, and internet access for education and job searches. Their structured phase-up treatment model spans 90 days, with clients progressively earning greater freedom and responsibility as they advance through the program. Treatment begins with a two-week blackout phase and writing assignments that help clients address underlying issues contributing to substance use. As residents progress through three or four phases (depending on individual circumstances), they gain increased privileges for outings, work, or education—sometimes with support persons accompanying them. Humboldt Recovery Center provides comprehensive services addressing family relationships, parenting skills, vocational support, educational assistance, medical care coordination, and help with housing and transportation challenges. The program emphasizes nutrition and fitness, with on-site fitness rooms and nutritional counseling throughout treatment. For clients with co-occurring disorders, the center supports medication-assisted treatment with non-narcotic medications under proper supervision. The program strongly encourages family reconnection, allowing frequent visits from children and family members who can join for outings and meals. Employment is promoted for able clients showing good recovery progress, with counselors providing vocational support through established community business connections. Accountability remains central to the program, with mandatory and random drug testing conducted at least three times weekly. Following residential treatment, clients receive nine months of complimentary aftercare services through their alumni association, which offers ongoing counseling and sober social activities with meetings twice weekly.
