Established in 1985, Practical Recovery offers treatment services from its serene La Jolla, California facility. Founded by Dr. Hovarth, who developed the SMART (Self-Management and Recovery Training) method, this center addresses underlying causes of substance abuse and co-occurring disorders through non-12-step, evidence-based, and holistic approaches. Their innovative program includes outpatient services, individualized intensive outpatient programs (IIOP), detox support, and sober living options. This flexible model delivers residential-quality treatment while allowing clients to either return home each night or stay on-site. Treatment at Practical Recovery incorporates diverse therapeutic modalities including Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Treatment (CBT), Acupuncture, Hypnotherapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). The center works with PPO insurance plans through superbill reimbursement but does not accept HMOs, Medicare, or Medical coverage.
