Located in Derby, CT, the Diabetes Prevention Program is dedicated to empowering our community with essential resources for leading healthier lives. Offering a 12-week Intensive Lifestyle Intervention, our weekly one-hour classes focus on nutrition education and practical cooking demonstrations, drawing on the National Institutes of Health's Diabetes Prevention Program curriculum. Designed with our predominantly Latino and low-literate population in mind, we ensure that our hands-on learning experience is accessible and engaging for all participants. Each class uses fresh produce from our garden, reflecting the season's bounty. Additionally, we encourage family involvement by inviting loved ones to join the nutrition sessions, reinforcing the idea that diabetes is a familial concern. While adults enhance their health knowledge and participate in exercise classes, children have their own fitness sessions and infants are cared for in our onsite childcare, making this program a comprehensive support system for better health.
