About Diabetes Prevention Program
The Diabetes Prevention Program in East Haven, CT, is dedicated to empowering individuals through a comprehensive 12-week Intensive Lifestyle Intervention that emphasizes healthy living. Our weekly one-hour classes, rooted in the National Institutes of Health’s Diabetes Prevention Program curriculum, are tailored specifically for a low-literate and predominantly Latino audience. Participants enjoy engaging nutrition education, hands-on cooking demonstrations, and discussions using fresh produce harvested from our community garden. With an average attendance of 15-20 adults each week, many participants also benefit from a subsequent hour of professionally-led exercise classes, while children engage in their own specially designed exercise programs and younger children are cared for in onsite childcare. Recognizing diabetes as a family-oriented challenge, we encourage family involvement in our nutritional classes to foster supportive environments for healthier lifestyle changes.
