About Farm & Food Systems Fellowship
The Farm & Food Systems Fellowship in Spirit Lake, IA, is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of advocates for a sustainable food system that prioritizes social, environmental, and economic justice. Through an accessible, tuition-free program, we empower our Fellows with hands-on, organic food system education and practical skills needed to impact their communities. During a transformative six-month residential experience, participants engage in innovative projects such as growing and distributing diverse crops, maintaining community gardens, and integrating food and ecological literacy into educational settings. In collaboration with regional non-profits, selected Fellows also facilitate health-focused educational sessions, support farmers markets, and develop channels for greater access to nutritious food. The fellowship culminates in a Community Action Year, where our Fellows apply their training and work towards advancing food assistance initiatives in their local areas. Applications are accepted until March each year, with the fellowship experience typically running from May to October.
