The Diabetes Prevention Program at Hockomock Area YMCA in Brookline, MA, is dedicated to reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes in our community. In partnership with the YMCA of Central Massachusetts and recognized as a Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program Provider, we offer a supportive environment for individuals aged 18 and older who are overweight or have prediabetes. Our evidence-based program, grounded in National Institutes of Health research, has proven to lower the onset of diabetes by 58% overall, and up to 71% in participants over 60. Through 16 weekly sessions followed by ongoing monthly support, a trained lifestyle coach guides participants in healthy eating, increased physical activity, and sustainable behavior changes. Participants not only work towards the goal of losing 7% of their body weight and achieving 150 minutes of physical activity per week, but they also benefit from forming friendships and a network of encouragement within a small group setting.
