About Farm & Food Systems Fellowship
The Farm & Food Systems Fellowship based in Cumberland Center, ME, cultivates the next generation of educators and advocates for a just and sustainable food system. With a commitment to social, environmental, and economic equity, this program offers immersive organic agriculture education without tuition fees to ensure accessibility. Through hands-on learning at the Allegheny Farm in Highland County, VA, Fellows engage in diverse activities including growing and distributing crops, leading educational initiatives in health care, maintaining community gardens, and promoting food literacy in schools. They also support local farmers' markets and direct-to-consumer programs, while mentoring new cohorts. Each Fellow embarks on a transformative journey lasting six months, followed by a Community Action Year to apply their skills and knowledge in collaboration with regional non-profit organizations. Applications are accepted until March each year, with experiences running from May to October.
