Located in Box Elder, SD, the Farm & Food Systems Fellowship, part of the Allegheny Mountain Institute, is dedicated to empowering the next generation of advocates for a just food system that prioritizes social, environmental, and economic equity. This innovative program offers a unique, tuition-free learning opportunity designed to enhance accessibility for all aspiring fellows. Participants receive hands-on education in organic food systems while gaining practical experience in growing and distributing diverse crops, facilitating health-focused educational sessions, and maintaining community gardens. Additionally, fellows engage in community initiatives like farmers markets and direct-to-consumer programs, develop strategies to improve access to healthy foods, and participate in mentorship roles for future cohorts. Selected fellows embark on a transformative six-month experiential journey at the Allegheny Farm Campus, culminating in a Community Action Year where they apply their knowledge in collaboration with regional non-profit organizations. Applications are accepted until March for an enriching experience that runs from May through October each year.
