The Farm & Food Systems Fellowship in Garretson, SD empowers dedicated individuals to become advocates for a just and sustainable food system. Hosted by the Allegheny Mountain Institute, this transformative program offers organic food system education without tuition fees, ensuring accessibility for all aspiring fellows. Participants engage in hands-on training at the Allegheny Farm, learning to grow and distribute diverse crops while implementing health education initiatives, maintaining community gardens, and fostering food and ecological literacy in schools. The fellowship emphasizes collaboration with local partners to enhance farmers' markets, develop distribution channels for healthy foods, and support community food coalitions. After an immersive six-month residential study, fellows embark on a Community Action Year, applying their skills in partnership with regional non-profit organizations to make a meaningful impact on their communities.
