About Farm & Food Systems Fellowship

Based in Hill City, SD, the Farm & Food Systems Fellowship, part of the Allegheny Mountain Institute, is dedicated to training and empowering individuals to champion a food system that prioritizes social, environmental, and economic justice. Our Fellows engage in an immersive six-month experiential learning program on the Allegheny Farm, where they receive comprehensive education in organic food systems without the burden of tuition, ensuring accessibility for all. Throughout their journey, Fellows develop practical skills by growing and distributing diversified crops, implementing innovative health care education, maintaining community gardens, and enhancing food and ecological literacy in local schools. They also play a vital role in supporting farmers markets and improving access to healthy foods by strengthening distribution channels and engaging in community food coalition efforts. Following their Fellowship, participants dedicate a Community Action Year to apply their newfound expertise in partnership with regional non-profit organizations, fostering lasting change in the food landscape. Applications are accepted until March each year, with experiences typically occurring from May to October.
