Day 19: With Jesus at His Death

Take a moment to quiet yourself: close your eyes and take some deep breaths.

Pray this prayer or something similar in your own words: Jesus, help me draw close to you by seeing my suffering in yours and your suffering in mine.

In his last hours of life, Jesus prayed words from two psalms of lament (Psalm 22:1 and Psalm 31:5). Read today's passage slowly, engaging your heart and your senses. What do you see and hear? What details do you notice as you watch Jesus in these moments before his death?

Prayerfully read the passage a second time. What image or images from this moment does God press upon your heart?

As you close this time of prayer, talk with Jesus about what this passage has brought up for you. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, please reach out to your local emergency services or a crisis line right away. You can also find support resources on 7 Cups.

Reflection Questions

Personal reflection:

What must Jesus have felt as he took his last breaths? After walking so closely with the Father, what would it have been like to feel abandoned by God in his darkest moment?

Community discussion:

In the midst of your difficulties, have you felt abandoned by God, or faced the death of someone you love? How might your experiences draw you closer to Jesus in his agony?
