Take a moment to close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Then open your eyes and slowly read and pray today's psalm in the image above.

The psalmist feels like he is sinking in deep mud with the water rising to his neck (1-2). He is worn out from calling for help, and his eyes fail as he looks for God (3). Tell God how you are feeling.

Ask the Lord to save you from your situation (13-18), in his timing (13). In your suffering, you may also have felt abandoned and scorned by others (20-21). Verse 21 reminds us that Jesus had the same experiences. Think of Jesus being with you in your feelings of abandonment.

Ask God for protection (29). Praise God for all he has done for you (30-36), or, if that feels too difficult, express your intention to praise him in the future (30-31). Conclude your time by praying through the entire psalm.

Reflection Questions

Personal reflection:

In what ways do you find yourself sinking into the mire, with the water closing over your head (1-3)? Does God feel distant? Tell God about this.

Community discussion:

Have you felt abandoned or scorned by others in your suffering (20-21)? How does it feel to know that Jesus went through the same experiences?
