Break them down even further! If even the smallest steps seem overwhelming or not worth doing, then try going even smaller. This could mean that “get out of bed” becomes individual steps of “remove covers”, “sit up”, “swing legs over the side of the bed”, and finally, “stand up”. Matching the size of the task to what you feel capable of in the moment can make things feel more doable. And even if you don’t make it all the way to standing up, you’ve still made progress and achieved 3/4 steps! When things feel meaningless or not worth doing, it can help to reframe the task in a more compassionate light. Try thinking about how taking action now is a form of self-care for both your present and future self. For instance, you might think, “Getting out of bed now will let me take care of myself further which my future self will thank me for.” And then actually take a moment to thank your past self! It may seem silly at first, but it can really shift your mindset. Finally, make sure to practice both self-care and self-compassion. Be kind to yourself. Imagine what you would say to a dear friend who is going through the same thing. Say those words to yourself. We’re often far more critical of ourselves than we would ever be to someone we love–and that criticism is rarely fair or helpful.

It’s okay to feel like that. Sometimes, the smallest steps are overwhelming and not worth doing. I’ve been in a period of my life where I felt down, and the simplest activities felt like too much. There were times when I didn’t want to talk to anyone, not even my friends. What really helped me during that time was self talk. I would talk to myself about the situation, trying to understand why I felt this way and what I needed to do next. I even wrote down the pros and cons of the things I was avoiding. This helped me see things more clearly and set out my steps towards the best. For things that didn’t feel worth doing or didn’t bring me any value, I reminded myself that it was okay not to do them, because I didn’t have to. Taking that pressure off helped me feel less overwhelmed.

Being overwhelmed, while understandably not a good feeling, is something that’s can be worked through. It is possible that you might be dealing with some mental fatigue, or burnout. A great first step is to give yourself grace and patience– negative self-talk is common alongside being overwhelmed, but realistically what it does is open you up to all-or-nothing thinking (I need to do this or I'm horrible at everything, etc.). As someone who experiences depression and burnout pretty regularly, I completely understand how it feels much easier to lean into the negative thoughts. It’s a lot easier to lay in bed, not doing anything. It can be really scary to try to work through it by yourself, which is why I would also suggest reaching out for help from friends, family, therapists, or certified listeners here on 7cups can help you learn and develop coping strategies that work for you! It’s totally understandable to feel like even the smallest steps are too difficult, but with patience and some help, it should eventually feel more manageable.

The first step would be to take a deep breath. Take five minutes and practice mindfulness by focusing on your breath. Assess how you are feeling now. In case you are not feeling calmer yet maybe even consider stepping away from your task and taking a walk outside. While on your walk try and explore why you feel like this, maybe something not worth doing? What makes you think this? What are some things that are worrying you? Try to investigate if these worries/thoughts are true or just something you feel or assume. Try to imagine how it will feel once you achieve your goal. Once you feel more settled, try to do the task again just for 1-2 minutes and see how that goes.

It sounds like you've been finding it difficult and overwhelming to take even small steps. When even small steps feel like too much, it could be a sign of burnout, a mental health disorder, or perhaps even self doubt which is weighing heavily. Our inner critic may say 'why bother', but sometimes the best way forward can often be breaking tasks down into smaller more manageable steps. What I've found is that celebrating progress, no matter how tiny, can help you to rebuild self confidence. Sometimes it may even help to reframe tasks as acts of self love rather than obligations. Additionally, if family members, partners or therapy resources are available to you, reaching out for support can make your journey easier - remember, you can also always reach out for support on 7 Cups, we are here to support you.

Hey there, I hear you. First of all, I feel you are going through something that has lent you less favorable results than you hoped for. Something that has stayed with me when in tough times is "sometimes it is not that we feel defeated because we don't know what to do, but that we know... and they don't seem to give fruit. In those times, all you need is relief, not results." Could you try applying that in your own life too? What do you need relief from? Where is the pain exceeding your pain management resources? Where do you need help? Would a friendly ear help you best? Or a direct practical solution for the problem at hand? Distinguishing between that may be the first step towards feeling relief. And if nothing else works, remember you can take a break and rest/sleep for a bit. Let go and let God. Sometimes, easing up on solving things in our life on our own is all we need. My encouragement is with you always. Please reach out to someone trusted if you need immediate assistance through this phase (because that is what it is, a phase... not your future permanent state).
