While it is possible that he hangs around his gay friend because he feels more valid or comfortable, or is seeking help with his own identity, it is more likely that they’re just friends and that he’s not gay. The people we hang around don’t always determine who we are. Hanging around gay people will make you gay the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall(there’s not much of a relationship). Friendship is something that transcends differences and brings people together, regardless of various parts of their identity.
Basically, he could be, but it’s equally likely to more likely that he isn’t.
