Moving Forward

Goal

Recognize my own current level of motivation and what I see as the benefits, drawbacks, and challenges to starting a weight management.

Moving ForwardNow that we’ve gone over some of the benefits of weight management, as well as some of the challenges to weight management, let’s spend the rest of this guide focusing on making a weight management plan that will work for you.

Sometimes, even though we know how change will benefit us, we can find it hard to want to change. In this lesson, we are going to consider how we’re feeling about making changes right now. Even if you don’t feel like you have enough motivation right now, or that you’re not sure where to find the appropriate resources, remember that you already took the first stepping: working through this guide! By working with 7cups, you have the added benefit of a support network literally at your fingertips. Everyone here is working on their own growth path and want to see you succeed at yours as well. At 7cups, you have a built-in support network, with people who are working on their own growth paths and who want to see you succeed on yours, as well.

It is likely this isn’t your first attempt at weight management, and it might feel like you don’t really have control over the situations. This can be normal after multiple attempts without the success you hope for from a plan. However, the truth is that you have a choice right now. You could decide to stop working through this guide now, or you can decide to continue on this journey. Only YOU can make that choice.

Jordan’s Story

Pros and ConsAfter he appointment with her doctor, Jordan sits down to really consider how and what she can change in her attitude and approach towards weight management. She makes a pros and cons list, shown here:

  Pros Cons
Committing to a weight management plan
  1. I’d feel better about myself
  2. I’d be healthier
  3. I could do more during the day
  1. This is a lot of work and I already have so much on my plate
  2. I have never had success before so why now?
Staying with my current lifestyle
  1. Less work
  2. I’m kind of ok with where I am now
  3. I wouldn’t have to face failing
  1. My doctor said I’m at risk for health problems
  2. I don’t have a lot of energy during the day
  3. I miss wearing some of my favorite clothes

When she finishes the list, Jordan takes some time to really think about her list. The more she reflects, the more she realizes she wants to make the changes, even though it’s going to be hard. She thinks the positives to changing and the negatives to staying where she is now outweigh the costs of changing and benefits of staying the same.

Now, grab a piece of paper to write on or share on the Diabetes Forum: On a scale of 1 (Not at all) to 10 (A lot, ready to make a plan and stick to it) how much do you want to change?
