Bio

Hi! You can call me Lonnie. I've suffered from anxiety and bipolar disorder as well as an eating disorder for a long time, and have learned how to cope with these things in different ways. I love music and have studied at the university level for two years as a singer. My favorite band is twenty one pilots and I'm VERY into them. #1 fan, right? Helping people get through tough times is something I'm passionate about. I know that one of the first things that can be done to help with one's hurting is to have someone to listen. Please let me know if there's anything you'd like to talk about!

Take a video for your future self
Journals & Diaries / by Lonnie

...See more Hello fellow journa-ers, (journalists?) This week I will be turning 29. I feel old because of it sometimes, especially when I'm at school, so I'm dreading this birthday a bit, which I know is sad. So this morning I was thinking about how I keep comparing myself to other people (which is something I have posted about before). I started to think about how I should remember that I have been through a lot; it's not my fault that I'm not exactly where my friends are with life and marriage. They haven't survived what I have survived, and perhaps if they did, I would be "ahead" of them. So I took my camera out to talk about this, and the way it flowed turned it into a sort of "letter to my future self" kind of thing, just full of reminders that it is good that I am who I am and that I have lived long enough to dread it 😂 This is the same thing as having a diary or a journal, I believe. It's just different because you can see yourself and hear how you sounded when you captured it. Maybe in a year I will watch this video and feel better about turning 30. Only time will tell! Literally! But even if there isn't some kind of special milestone that you're hitting right now, you could record a video about yourself and what your goals are. What you are doing that day, and you might inadvertently reveal the beauty in the mundane. I just wanted to share this idea with you all, because I love you and I think it is awesome that you do what you do every time you write!

Don't Forget that Quiet People are Hurting too.

...See more TW: short references to death and dying. My dad is quiet. Classic Scandinavian man. But I know there's a ton going on in his head. He's a doctor. The thing is that sometimes things in him just slip, and we get a really small glimpse of it is going on in there. For example, when my paternal grandfather was dying of alzheimers, a time came where after a drink or two, my dad said some things that were really hard to hear. He talked about how he'd rather end his own life before going through what his dad did. It cut to hear that. Another time, my dad talked about working in the ER. He went into detail specifically talking about what it was like to witness children coming deceased or dying in the ER. He described it with some detail and he looked so far away. I think we all should be checking on our quiet people sometimes. Show them open doors that they can choose to walk through, instead of just stewing on the spot. Sometimes things build up inside of us and we don't realize it until it's really changing our behavior. So yes, please check on your quiet friends, your shy friends, your introverted ones. Sometimes they just need a little prompt to pay attention to what's going on inside themselves so they can ask for help or to talk with someone. Thanks guys <3

Healthy Boundaries Around Maintaining Employment

...See more I can think of several times in my career where I "toughed it out" and stayed in jobs longer than I should have because of how bad they were for me. Part of being someone in a service-oriented field (mental healthcare) is remembering that one can't help others with their health if one isn't taking care of oneself as well. Sometimes it can be really hard to let go of a job because of the love one has for a patient, a resident, a client, and not wanting to "leave them" in order to move on to better things. One might feel like they need to stay in their role because they think others will see them as weak for stepping down. But there's nothing stronger than letting go of something that you feel obligated to in order to maintain the boundaries surrounding one's own health and life and your peace. Setting limits and sticking to them are skills that have to be learned and practiced just because of how hard it can be. But in the end, when boundaries are respected it allows for greater freedom. I had to leave my most recent job because of the workplace culture there. I was ruminating about anything my boss said or anything that went wrong during a shift all the time in my daily life, so I was truly not getting any breaks at all from work. A job isn't meant to take up so much space, especially when it comes to be more negative than positive. Having to say good bye to the wonderful children I served there was exceedingly difficult, but in the end I respected my own boundaries by choosing to find a better role more fitted to me elsewhere. If you leave a job, there might be a time required by your brain for grieving the good parts. But if you "follow the peace" and are able to truly move on, the old job will stay behind as you move forward to your ultimate goals. If your job is contributing to an unhealthy lifestyle, if it makes you feel violated, if you're burnt out and no one is supporting you, if you're having a hard time recognizing your achievements and find yourself only looking at your mistakes, ask yourself why you're keeping yourself in the job you've got. This doesn't mean you have to quit or do anything you're uncomfortable with. Maybe right now you're staying in a job because you need it. (for the pay, benefits, resume, etc.) Maybe you've been loyal for a long time and you know why. By all means please make your own choices and I hope you can maintain your boundaries. Remember you yourself should always be your #1 priority. I just thought I'd share since I've just experienced this.

Feeling behind

...See more Do you ever compare yourself to people your age and feel like you're behind in life? Maybe all your friends are getting married and having children, maybe you see a lot of them getting great promotions, or perhaps getting into a graduate school. And since you're not there yet, it makes you feel bad about yourself? This might not be a universal experience for those in their 20's, but I do know that it's a common one. A great phrase I've heard here and there is "comparison is the thief of joy." It's not super healthy to compare yourself to others, especially if it's causing you to lose some of your self-esteem. Part of being a young adult is being patient with yourself as you find your way. Everyone has their different things that hold them back or badly affect their quality of life. We don't know what others have been through or what they're going through now, but we do know what we have. Maybe we've been through stumbling blocks that slow us down while the person next to us has had smooth sailing. Those stumbling blocks offer us a different kind of success; a type of success that is invisible from the outside. But you know what you've survived and you know what you've defeated! So, with that knowledge, it's good to remember that in young-adult life there are a lot of waiting games. But good things come to those who wait!

Allow yourself the grace to live that you give to others
Depression Support / by Lonnie

...See more So often we are overly selfish critical, mean, negative to ourselves, telling ourselves we don't deserve to be happy or even that we aren't worthy enough to live. This often happens when dealing with depression. Would you say those negative things to other people whenever they make a mistake? How do you treat others when they aren't doing well? Do you belittle them or tell them they don't deserves to receive help for what they're going through? Do you beat yourself up when you feel depressed? What would you say to someone you care about if they told you they haven't been feeling well? You deserve to be alive! Sometimes it's really hard to be alive, and it's important to find support in those times. You would do what you can to help someoneif they are struggling, so dont you deserve kindness when you're suffering? Remember that you are meant to be your own best friend. Today, give yourself a compliment. You don't have to blame yourself every time you're imperfect. We are all human beings who make mistakes, and that's ok. Give yourself the same grace you give to others!

Finding Old Journals
Journals & Diaries / by Lonnie

...See more I have pretty much been writing in journals/diaries since I was capable of writing. I have a little diary with puppies on the front and a lock so no one can read it! There are so many reasons to keep a journal: documenting life changes, creating a reference for the future, tracking things like dreams, remembering important thoughts or findings. Some people keep everything in one journal. Some people, like me, keep different journals for different reasons. I have a main journal where I simply write whatever I'm thinking about. I have a journal for prayer and for recording homilies. I've had a journal for I have a journal where I write down memories, flashbacks, or dreams from the trauma I experienced as a child.  With all that variety, I have a lot to go back to and read now and in the future. One time when I was high school I even started a mood tracker for myself. I found that journal a little while back and discovered my first manic episode - something I didn't even know I was experiencing at the time. Anyway, I just encourage all of you to keep writing because it can be amazing what you find in the future. Maybe you'll something you predicted and wrote down long before it happened. Maybe quite the opposite! Journals are a hidden treasure trove. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
