Prayer request for parents in their 80’s.

...See more The last 6 months have been tough. My mother was very ill and was hospitalized twice. She has been home for 7 weeks and my parents are in a car accident. Both have been cleared by the ER and are home. Prayers needed that my mom’s wheelchair wasn’t damaged, her bruised/sprained ankle heals as fast as it can for an 84 yr old, the van is repairable and doesn’t cost too much to repair, and my father doesn’t suffer from PTSD from the accident, he is 88.

...See more And I get a call from my sister at 8:35 pm. She tells me to sit down. My parents were in a car accident and both were taken to the ER. Mind you I just got home now 6 days ago from being with them for 6 months because my mother was in and out of the hospital and rehab twice during that time. She was very sick both times. And I wonder why I didn’t sleep last night. Everyone is fine and my sister took off today to be with them and to make sure nothing was missed in the ER. They are 84 and 88.

...See more I was back home for the last 6-7 months and I just arrived back at my legal residence. The last few days with packing my car saying goodbye to my parents and one last trip to my uncle has been tough. I have to get back to my life with decreased running and caring for others. It’s 1:11 pm and I’m sitting down looking at the bags that need to be put away. My mom and I both said it felt weird with me leaving and me not going to be around. They all are doing well. My sister is my parents medical proxy and POA so she will keep up on that. My uncle knows I’m only a call away. It’s nice to have reliable WiFi again.

...See more It’s been 6 months since I came out to help my parents and my uncle was added to responsibilities. My mother has hopefully broken out of the vicious cycle of hospitalization and rehab and has been home 2 weeks. My uncle finally made it home 5 days ago from a 3 1/2 month rehab stay. Even with everyone is back home, I’m still in limbo as to whether or not I’m going to be able to return to my legal residence. Once my uncle is more settled he wouldn’t need me to be there every week. My parents, it’s not clear. My mother has said when I go back “home” for a couple of weeks and once your uncle is settled. Ahhhh! On some level my parents like the help and want me to stay but not carve out a space for myself. The other side, “they don’t want to give up their independence” and yet want me to go everywhere with them. I want them doing their own thing and try to stay out of their way during their morning and night routines.

Mine are in their 80’s and we have recently gon through a period of 5 -6 consecutive months of the hospital and rehab revolving door with my mother. How are you all coping with the role of caregiver/support person? It’s draining me emotionally.

...See more TRIGGER WARNING Due to my mother’s medical emergencies since January I’ve been primarily staying at my parent’s house and then added my Uncle’s needs into the mix because he ended up in the hospital and rehab since February. Initially the joke was I don’t have a home but a bedroom in 3 different houses/locations. During this time I’ve had issues with my anxiety cycling. Old behaviors that were under control showed back up like binge eating. I also have a diagnosis of MDD and some of my symptoms overlap. My positive coping mechanisms and making sure I was staying hydrated, getting sleep, and eating 2 meals a day worked short term. I binge eating during at night when no one can see me do it. I’m to the point that I’m not sleeping, not caring if I’m binge eating, not eating during the day, wanting to cry at the drop of a hat, and my rock bottom coping. I was treated for “cutting” in the past because of the degree and self-harm I inflicted on myself from scratching. I’ve started scratching. At first I accidentally scratched myself in a vulnerable spot and it felt good. I’ve intentionally sought that spot again to “scratch”. I’m fighting this urge to scratch. I know what the cause of the anxiety and depression are but there isn’t a lot I can do about it. Finding time for self-care is hard and then when I have the time I want to do something mindless. I’m tired of pretending everything is okay and that I’m coping just fine.
