And I get a call from my sister at 8:35 pm. She tells me to sit down. My parents were in a car accident and both were taken to the ER. Mind you I just got home now 6 days ago from being with them for 6 months because my mother was in and out of the hospital and rehab twice during that time. She was very sick both times. And I wonder why I didn’t sleep last night. Everyone is fine and my sister took off today to be with them and to make sure nothing was missed in the ER. They are 84 and 88.

I was deeply saddened to read your story, but I am also happy to know that they are doing well now. It is only natural to feel anxious and lose sleep during such times—reactions we cannot simply suppress, given the emotional bonds we share; seeing them in pain naturally causes us distress. However, we must handle the situation carefully; excessive worry or mental strain can harm our own health, which would only compound the difficulties. Since they are elderly, we need to look after them and try to keep their spirits up. We should reassure them that nothing serious has happened and that everything will be fine because we are here for them. Doing so will boost their confidence and help them recover more quickly.
