Limiting Beliefs
IDG 7 Cups Hub / by SilverWhiteWinters

...See more I've been thinking a lot about limiting beliefs recently - like when we tell ourselves "oh, I'm really bad at X," or "I have never been good at Y." It's interesting how much these beliefs can make it harder for us to grow!   The Inner Development Goals course mentions that Optimism is a skill that can be developed for enabling change. It describes Optimism as: "the ability to maintain and convey a sense of hope, a positive attitude, and confidence in the potential for meaningful change."   Something interesting that I think could help with this is the understanding that what we believe about ourselves can either reinforce our bad habits or make behaviour change easier. Our brain is wired to work harder to maintain habits that match our self-image.   As an example, let's look at some possible self-talk that someone who wants to start working out 4x a week could have: * "I can just never stick to a workout schedule" --> this is a limiting belief that ties our identity to being bad at working out consistently, so we are less likely to achieve this goal. * "I'm going to try sticking to a workout schedule" --> this is not a limiting belief about ourselves, but it frames working out consistently as something external to us, rather than tying it to who we are. It's more helpful, but we can do better! * "I'm someone who prioritizes my health and takes the time to exercise regularly" --> this ties the habit we want to develop to our identity, so our brain will work with us to maintain this habit!   It's not about lying to ourselves, but it's about reframing our thoughts to get our brain to work with us as we work to change our behaviour. We all have the capacity to grow and can shape who we are over time. Like Dr. Tracey Marks says, "You're choosing a version of yourself to grow into, and you're reinforcing it with small, consistent actions." (YouTube Video: WhySome People Build Better Habits (and How You Can Too) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObA4ne4TVsE&t=252s]) So what's one of your limiting beliefs, and what could you tell yourself instead? 🌻

Presence: A Skill that Nurtures Your Relationship with Yourself
IDG 7 Cups Hub / by SilverWhiteWinters

...See more Sometimes it can be easy to push down emotions, distract ourselves from them, or even intellectualize them by engaging with them only on a head-level (I will be the first to admit I have plenty of experience with all three!) It makes sense that we might try to avoid being present with our emotions at times, especially if they feel intense or unpleasant. But what's the alternative to this, and how does it benefit us?  For a few years, I have been on a journey of learning to be present with emotions in my body, with acceptance and compassion. Because of how much this has helped me in my mental health journey, Presence is one of the skills that stood out to me in the Inner Development Goals Path.   Presence is described in the IDG path as "being fully engaged and attentive to your thoughts, emotions, and experiences in the present moment without immediately evaluating them as good or bad. Instead, it involves observing and accepting them with an open heart and mind. This relationship with oneself cultivates self-acceptance and compassion. It allows individuals to explore their thoughts and emotions without self-criticism, leading to a deeper understanding of their inner world."   Though all of us are unique, one thing that has been helpful for me in this journey is to take time to maintain compassionate attention on where I feel emotions in my body (e.g., areas of tension, feelings in chest, feelings in stomach). Sometimes, if the emotion is unpleasant, I even place a hand on my chest or stomach (wherever I'm feeling the most) and imagine I'm sending warmth and care into that vulnerable place inside of me. When I do this, sometimes the intensity reduces, and I feel comforted.   Sometimes I also try to view myself as a parent to the little hurting parts of me (if you're familiar with the concept of your 'Inner Child', I like to think we have many inner children, so-to-speak). I wouldn't push a child into a basement to get it away from me, but I used to do that with parts of myself! The hurting parts of me also appreciate my presence much more than they liked being pushed away. They are comforted more quickly, too.   What is one emotion (or part of yourself) that you struggle to stay present with or accept? Remember that acceptance doesn't mean defeat; it's a starting point for healing and self-compassion. Once you've thought of the emotion, if you imagine it as belonging to a little child under your care, what is one thing you would like to say to (or do for) this child as you stay present with it? I'd love to hear your answers or anything that you want to share about your own journey in this area! 🌻   --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (If you're curious, though I am deliberately trying to use accessible language, I am an avid fan of Internal Family Systems and also dabble in Polyvagal Theory)

What affirmation or mantra has been helping you recently?

...See more I'm curious to know what kinds of affirmations or mantras you are finding helpful right now 🌻 If you feel comfortable, please feel free to share your favourite affirmation and what you are using it for. If you don't currently use affirmations but would like to, please share one that you might like to try! 🌞 I'll start - one I am liking right now is "I can do more than I think I can." I'm using this to remind me that I can do more than my limiting beliefs and anxious thoughts tell me I can. It encourages me to believe in myself and take baby steps outside of my comfort zone so I can keep growing. How about you?
