Staying Safe as a LGBTQ+ Member
Safety & Knowledge at 7 Cups / by carrotgoosoup
Last post
October 6th
...See more Happy October! We’re back again for another Safety Discussion and this time our topic is Staying Safe as a LGBTQ+ member 🌈 ❓❓❓Why talk about being safe as a LGBTQ+ member❓❓❓ Inclusivity is important!  Inclusivity is about making and continuing to work towards having an environment where all people feel respected and valued. It looks like understanding people's diverse identities and needs, reducing barriers so people can access and engage easier, and promoting acceptance and equity for everyone 🥰 And here at 7 Cups we work towards having everyone included and welcomed :) It's not a perfect system (as no one space is), so continued discussions and working on making systems better is key! 🔑 🌞Safety for our marginalized community members is important! Marginalized people are those in society who may be treated as less important and have less say. LGBTQ+ members fall under this umbrella because of ongoing stigma about identities, lack of education and understanding, and ideologies that people need to exist in one particular way.  What does being a LGBTQ+ community member mean? LGBTQ+ (or other terms are: Queer or LGBTQIA+) stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer. The plus symbol indicates more gender orientations and sexual orientations not listed. LGBTQ+ is an umbrella term for those who do not identify solely as straight or cisgender. What are general considerations to stay safe as an LGBTQ+ individual? * 🍂Be mindful of your environment. Look for signs of greater safety (e.g. pride progress flag visibility or posted inclusive messages) or danger.  * 🌈Remember that your queer visibility is your choice. It is up to you if you want to be out, what you want to share with others, and how you want to present, so that you are safe. * 🌎Be informed of current events. Knowing what is going on in your community or current events (from credible sources), can inform your choices and if you need to make adjustments for safety sake. * 😎Protect your privacy. Follow safe online practices such as: being aware of what information you share about yourself (e.g. address, workplace, school name), avoiding clicking on suspicious links, and having strong passwords for your accounts. What are steps I can take if I feel unsafe as a LGBTQ+ member? We want everyone to feel safe on 7 Cups! If you are feeling unsafe, please do take steps to make sure you are protected. You saying something not only helps yourself but others in 7 Cups too 😁 If you are in a 1-on-1 chat, you have the option to block someone. Doing this will remove them from your chat list and will prevent either of you from contacting each other.  👉Instructions: https://help.7cups.com/hc/en-us/articles/360026239493-What-safety-features-are-in-private-messages-PMs-or-1-1-chats. Additionally, you can report a member or listener through the helpdesk. If you have screenshots, please provide them to best help admin review the situation (note: if you block someone, do so after you report them, otherwise the chat will disappear and inaccessible). 👉Instructions: https://help.7cups.com/hc/en-us/requests/new.  [https://help.7cups.com/hc/en-us/requests/new.] As an ally, how can I do my part to keep 7 Cups inclusive and safe for LGBTQ+ members? * 👀Challenge your (unconscious or conscious) biases. Whether we are doing it intentionally or not, we may have absorbed beliefs that hurt LGBTQ+ people. This means to keep being aware of your beliefs; keep learning about LGBTQ+ experiences! * 👂Listen and believe LGBTQ+ voices. Be curious, understanding, and caring to LGBTQ+ people. Everyone is an expert in their own lives so if you come across something you don't understand, you can learn more about it rather than questioning its validity. * 🤭Keep the identity of your LGBTQ+ friends confidential. Some people are not out for a variety of reasons and it's important to let them share their identity and parts of themselves on their own. * 🤗Encourage inclusivity in chatrooms! Be a model of safety and openness to our LGBTQ+ members.  Want to learn more? What are some steps I can take? 🌟 * What are some ways I can support LGBTQ+ members here on 7 Cups? 🥰

Mods are Human
Safety & Knowledge at 7 Cups / by carrotgoosoup
Last post
September 8th
...See more Hello wonderful friends! I hope you all are well as we're entering September 🌞🌻 It's time for another safety discussion and today's topic is: 💁Mods are Human🧕 Why talk about mods being human? We can forget that 7 Cups moderators are actual humans and not another bot on the internet 🤖. Moderators, or mods, are one of the essential roles in 7 Cups that support structure and safety. Knowing moderator roles and responsibilities and reviewing that they are people too, can help everyone know how to access support and treat moderators as fellow human beings 💗. A unique aspect of 7 Cups is that we are all humans (okay, except for Noni). All moderators and listeners are real people behind a screen. A human touch 🫶 on 7 Cups means that moderators bring in active listening skills, empathy, and consideration to both listeners and members. Alright, what do moderators do? These are some of the many things moderators do: * Monitor conversations in chatrooms to make sure they are respectful and safe 👀 * Addressing any harmful (e.g. offensive content, harassment) chats through warnings, muting, or deleting messages 🙅 * Encourage engaging conversations in support rooms 🗣 * De-escalate conflicts in group support chat 🤝 * Opening and closing special chatroom spaces 🚪 What kind of moderators are there? There are four types of moderators! All moderators: * Encourage safety and a positive environment in group rooms  * Open & close discussion pop-up rooms.  * Use moderator tools as needed to ensure safety in rooms 🦋Community-Centered Moderators: These moderators can moderate 1-2 chatrooms based on their subcommunity group. 👥Community Moderators: These moderators are paid and employed by 7 Cups to make sure there is coverage in support rooms at all times. They are identifiable through their username: they have the term mod in their name such as "CommunityModJennie", "CommunityModLucy", and "CommunityModIris."  🌏Global Moderators: These moderators can moderate every group room (excluding listener rooms). 👂Listener Chatroom Moderators: These moderators can moderate in listener specific rooms. They are identifiable in a chatroom when they have a “mod” label under their username and a mod badge in their profile. What are some things I can ask a moderator? Here are some example questions you can reach out to a moderator about: 1. "I'm hosting a game for listeners in the Listener Community Room in half an hour. Could you please open the room for me when you have time?" 🙂 2. "Help! There is an argument happening in (room). Could you please help de-escalate the situation?" 😱 3. "Oops. I accidentally pasted personal information into the group chat in (room). It was a complete mistake. Can you please remove that information?" 😥 What does this mean for me as a member or a listener? 1. Ask for help from a mod if you're encountering a situation in a room ✋ 2. Take time when talking with a mod, as if you're speaking to another person (because you are!) 🌟  3. Treat mods with respect and love (and thank them for their help!) 🥰 Helpful Links: Group Support Moderator role: https://www.7cups.com/forum/groupmod/Archives_1890/GroupSupportModeratorRole_33260/ Community Mod Schedule: https://www.7cups.com/forum/groupmod/CommunityModeratorsLounge_2143/CommunityModSchedule_318786/ Questions to Consider 🦺 1. How can I remind myself that mods are human too? 2. How has a mod helped me recently (without mentioning usernames)?

What queer traditions do you have?

...See more Normally I spend time during the holidays with family. And eat all the desserts. But none of these gatherings are fully affirming and often feel more draining than joyful. I'm trying to think of what I want to do tradition or ritual wise and am looking for ideas on how to incorporate my queer identity. I want to celebrate me!  Can I hear from you? What traditions do you have this time of year as a queer person?

Take What You Need

...See more We all need things. For me, it's just living a boring (inject some privilege) life as a human being where people don't make assumptions of me, make comments, and having a space where I can just be. This mock tear our flyer is based on that. So, if you need it, take what you need. I hope it brings some comfort and love.

National Coming Out Day
LGBTQ+ / MOGII Support / by carrotgoosoup
Last post

...See more It's National Coming Out Day!  For those who have come out, who or what helped you get there?  For me it was... * Already having some queer friends in my life helped immensely. They immediately supported and celebrated me. I knew they were safe! * Open hearted people. I had people in my life that had values such as love, understanding, and able to see the complexity of human life. They demonstrated being an ally to queer people already and didn't see people as fixed, static beings. They loved on me and others in their lives. * Some family members. I eventually came out to some family members. Some I did directly, others it was in passing. They all noticed and they all responded differently. But I made those choices because they are important people that I saw often (by choice) and I would hate to stay closeted with them.
