Communication with Adults Kids Can Be Hard!
Family & Caregivers / by impartialWheel9079

...See more I’m struggling with communication with my adult son. Whenever life gets tough for him or he’s going through something, our conversations often turn painful. He says things that make me feel like I wasn’t a good mother — as if he’s forgotten everything I did for him. He’ll tell me I’ve never done anything for him, and hearing that breaks my heart. I don’t always know how to handle it or how to respond in a way that helps. He’s now a father to a two-month-old baby girl, and I worry about what she’s being exposed to when he and her mother have loud arguments. I don’t want that environment to become her normal or for her to grow up thinking that’s what love looks like. I’m also trying to find peace within myself — to stop carrying guilt for what I couldn’t provide when I was a young single mom. I know in my heart that I did the best I could, but when he says hurtful things, it makes me question myself all over again. He swings between telling me I was the best mom in the world and then turning around and saying I never did anything for him. I wish I knew how to encourage him to seek mental or emotional help, because I truly believe he’s struggling. More than anything, I want him to get a handle on his emotions so that he can be healthy, balanced, and build a peaceful home for his own family. Right now, I just feel lost about how to communicate with him in a way that doesn’t end with both of us hurting — and I want to find a way to heal from the guilt and pain that these interactions keep bringing up.

Disappointed in myself

...See more So in my career, I work with student daily, and I had a student that kind of blew up on me today and she called me out because she felt like my communication with her was inconsistent. She said that she felt like my handling of communication with her was slack, and that made her feel like she didn’t want to continue Move forward with being a part of the school that I work at anymore so I lost her as a potential student, but hurt me more than anything was the fact that it made me reflect on how I handled her and perhaps a few other students because I overload myself and try to do too many things at once so I’m having a moment of feeling a little bit inadequate because I don’t feel like I delegated some of the task that I should’ve delegated and I feel like I say yes when I should say no sometimes and because of that, I overloaded myself and caused my students to be the collateral damage in that situation. It also makes me question how well I’m really doing And makes me wonder why I say yes when I should say no because the things that are important are not always getting my attention because I have this needs to say yes, all the time.

Feeling Sort of Inferior
Self-Esteem / by impartialWheel9079

...See more I have been doing really well for the most part with building my self-esteem and overcoming things from my past and my childhood. However, there are two relationships that were always a source of stress for me, and one of them was my relationship with my mother, and the other was a relationship with mine now ex who is the father of my two children. They always had a way of making me feel like I was in good enough or like I was less than and even in my growth and other areas of my life and all of my professional accomplishments, and in my great relationships with my children, I still feel inferior when I’m in their presence or when I speak to them because it feels like they’re judging everything that I don’t do correctly and they make me retreat mentally to the space I was in years ago.

...See more I am experiencing some conflict with my family with myself and my 25-year-old daughter who is having a hard time letting go of my mistakes that I made when I myself was a young parent and I had no idea what I was doing and now have younger children, and a marriage that came after my older daughter‘s father, and she feels as though my younger children are getting the life that she didn’t get and I don’t know how to navigate this or how to create boundaries when she begins to say mean and hurtful things because she is unable to see the growth in me and the attempts that I am making to try and create better and new relationships with my older children including her

Feeling Overworked

...See more I am feeling a bit overwhelmed and overworked and I’m not sure how appropriated I really am. I love the way everyone tells me how great I’m doing but annoyed by all the work I have to do at the same time but I love the way it feels to be praised so I do the work and don’t complain, which makes them add more things to do to my checklist.

...See more I am ending a 12 year relationship and we have 2 kids under 10. I am emotionally and mentally ready to move on but I worry about my kids. He has had a child with another woman during our relationship and it has been a strain in many ways on our relationship. He is very emotionally unavailable and I feel like I do it all on my own but he and his family make me feel bad for wanting to move on and say that I am abandoning him and our family. I just want my leave back!
