Missing Basic Human Knowledge
So, this was written because someone asked me what 4 times 80 is and I simply do not have this knowledge. I remember having to learn about this in... third grade? But I failed.
My dad always scolded or punished me for not being able to do math, but I don't recall him trying until maybe one time when I was already in my mid-teens (did not end well). I actually asked my boyfriend if he thought parents were supposed to help their children learn what they teach in school. He seems to think so, but it simply seemed inconsiderable up until now for me.
Now I am a 27 year old woman who has never learned to answer basic math problems without a calculator. No idea how I passed a college algebra course this way, but I managed. Despite this, I cannot survive without a calculator and I am very upset about it.
I even use a calculator for simple addition problems regularly.
How normal is this...? Is it so bad if I never actually learn this skill in my lifetime?

Totally fine! <3 Also, try Khan Academy. There are free, simple, easily explained math courses from basic to advanced. That will help you so much and give you more confidence <3

Also DuoLingo now offers math, but it’s more questions than actual teaching.
@jesusredeemedme2425 Oh yeah I tried the Duolingo one and I just couldn't catch on. I think with math I have to both understand how it works and also memorize numbers. Fractions are awful.
Yeah, you need to learn the basics first.
Another idea, and don’t take this weird. I’m a homeschooler and I would totally do it! Buy some secondhand math workbooks for younger grades. Start with the basics. The books teach you really well! Do it at home so you don’t feel weird about it. It would be SUCH a good intro! <3
On a similar note, have you heard of both self-led learning, and lapbooks? These will TOTALLY explode your mind with how amazing learning can be <3
@jesusredeemedme2425 I was homeschooled for a while in my teens! Maybe between the ages of 12 and 16 (including those ages). For some reason, I couldn't learn anything on my own.
I try to use AI as a teacher, but an AI can't force me to work. 🤔

Maybe it’s time to structure your time better. I’ve had to do that because too much free time makes me feel bleh.
AI doesn’t understand life so I wouldn’t rely on it XD
