Are we really supposed to know what we’re doing in our 20s?

Hi everyone! Just recently joined to day and love to see theres another outlet where feelings can be vented outside of your norm of social media. I’ve had a lot going on in my mind honestly the bast 1.5-2 yrs and quite honestly hadn’t found the right space or person to express it too.

Anyway, I’m 26F and I currently feel like I’m at such a loss. In my career specifically which has slowly lead to me losing myself in a way if that makes sense. I graduated in 2020, of course the best time to have done that, and feel like I’ve been struggling in this weird loophole ever since. I guess to start I ended up with a business degree since when applying for schools I had no idea what I wanted to do. Teaching or being a vet was always something I wanted as a kid but with parents as teachers they sort of lead me out of that direction and wanting to be a vet kinda dwelled into me wanting to do healthcare in general. However, me struggling in AP Bio in high school made me get beyond in my head and made me think I would fail at any science in college so I took the easy route and did business. In school I enjoyed it, I thought when I graduated I would land a job somewhere in the sports & entertainment industry or end up in the marketing or events department.

But, life happens and paths end up changing and I’ve now been at my current job for 2.5 almost 3 years now. While I enjoy the people I work with it took me a year and half to realize I’m not happy in my job whatsoever. If there was something else I could transition too in the company that I know I would enjoy then yeah sure I don’t think I’d be as worries but I just don’t see that for myself and now feel I have no idea what would make me happy.

Any time I decide on pursuing another career path it always ends up looking back into the sciences and healthcare which is a complete 180 from business. I fear having to start all over and be in more educational and financial debt than I already am. I just never saw myself being at this point in my timeline and it makes me feel so lost. I know in our 20s we’re basically toddlers again, figuring out life in a different way and we’re still young. This is the time for us to make changes and try new things but I guess I’m so fearful of that that I have no idea where to even begin.

So I guess my question is, are we supposed to know what we want in our 20s?? How can we get over the fear of trying new things that will make us happy? And also why is life like this haha

No I doubt many know what they are doing in their 20's or on...

Frankly many people find themselves, at first happy or content with job / career choice and then grow dissatisfied............... but the idea / plan that another program or degree fixes this is IMO not realistic, as it is not a guarantee you will enjoy jobs you get in that field either.

School of any sort does not prepare people for what they face in real work and not all jobs even in same industry are not one size fits all. What happens if you go through that add a couple years and you are not "happy" where to go then....

There is a lot of business things with healthcare related fields.

Have you considered different industries or positions with your current degree?

Those are thoughts that have come to mind too. Idk I just wonder sometimes if I chose the right thing for me you know?

And I know definitely want to be in a different industry just where is the problem. Currently I’m in the financial industry which at the time was a great start but don’t think its where I want to be.

As for positions, events, marketing, operations, or community engagement are all fields I would love to dive in on but in my current role I feel I’m hindered from that.
