Are we obligated to the promises we make to those who are not in our lives anymore?

I think the answer to that is, as with so many other real-life questions, is "it depends". Like, who is the person you made the promise to? What was the promise, exactly? Does this person still mean anything to you even after (s)he exited your life? Do you feel the promise is still important or is not anymore? Would not keeping the promise hurt that person in some way? Why or why not. etc.... The answers to questions like the foregoing will determine whether you keep the oath or not.
