This week’s check in is about Why Alone Doesn’t Have to Mean Lonely.

Given that technology can keep us connected—some would say hyperconnected—on a global scale, it would seem that loneliness could be extinguished with the press or swipe of a finger.

Instead, studies have shown that we are relying more and more on virtual connections, and that dependence makes us feel more alone. The holidays are notorious for triggering feelings of loneliness. There is, however, a difference between being alone and being lonely.

While being alone is a state of being outside the company of others, loneliness is a feeling of abandonment. And it’s that feeling of isolation and the sadness that stems from it—that frequently co-occurs with depression.

The holiday season has a way of amplifying feelings of loneliness, whether you miss loved ones, feel distressed over disappointing relationships, or find yourself yearning for an idealized version of your family's seasonal celebration.
