Dear diary
37 yrs old female. My boyfriend decided to go through my drawer and read my journal and he is now mad at me because of the things I had written. I onlybwrite down things that bother me to get then out of my head. He feels I should have been writing down everything that happened, and is confused as to why I haven't written down anything I did wrong.
I am so confused. This journal was supposed to be just an outlet to get things out of my mind, with no intention of re reading it myself or let alone have anyone else read it.
I feel a bit betrayed and confused as to why this argument even happened.
@sensibleFriend2985you are right. You should be able to write down anything you want. Your own journal isn’t for accusing yourself of anything...its to mostly get your own feelings and thoughts out of your head and onto paper. He should not be going thru your stuff anyway. Sounds like he has some trust issues
This happens to me as well, often. Writing helps me get through thoughts. My boyfriend seeks out my writings even though I’ve hidden them and they’re only for me, then he gets upset at me for writing about hurtful things he says and does to me. I don’t know a solution except to hide it better. I’m sorry.
First of all, it was an incredible invasion of privacy to have read your journal in the first place. I don't know if maybe you guys have an understanding about these things, but that isn't any of my business. Journaling is an extremely valid way to cope, and no one has the right to read what you have written unless you allow it. Keep doing what you are doing. I just started legitimately journaling a few days ago (I've always just done emotion writing like poetry and such) and it is so helpful. I hope this incident doesn't discourage you from writing about your feelings, even if it means you have to get one of those kiddie lock diaries.

I'm so sorry that happened to you. He should've never looked through your stuff without permission. That's a violation of privacy and you deserve to be able to write what you need to write without someone else trying to say that you should've written this or that.
hey dear,
Many people write journal, to pour their heart out, to feel better, and it does feels better after writing it, and sometimes reading it again, gives us sense that someone is listening.
I do write write journals, but online, If you search you'll find many. The reason i am mentioning this is, when you write, its just you who can open it with a password. You might not get the pleasure of writing it with a pen and paper, but it still helps.
our mind thinks a lot of things, many a times, they are things we don't say out loud, with fear of hurting people, our loved one's. some times in our journal we right things, we dont actually mean, we write to pour it out. Just imagine, if people can read all our thoughts, it will be kind of mess.
Just a suggestion, Your partner might have done wrong, coming into a very personal space as you feel, and many might feel, and maybe what you wrote, you didnt really meant and you know that. but cannot expect everybody to understand the way our mind works in our personal sacred spaces.
@sensibleFriend2985
this is why i hide my journal somewhere ain't no one gonna find it
i had the same problem with my mom i have a journal and i write all my feels down in it and i made the mistake of leaving it in my drawer unhidden and when i got home from school she's like why are you writing this depressing crap you should be happy.
in my head I'm like excuse me first of all you shouldn't have read that second i dont control wether or not I'm depressed its not my fault
i know how you feel but you need to find good hid spot
@sensibleFriend2985
I have to agree with you. He shouldn't get angry at you for having a personal outlet. Your journal is about your own feelings and is a way for you to cope and grow. That is a boundary in my opinion that he should not have crossed. I am a male and if I have a girlfriend I do realize that we all have personal feelings that sometimes are for us alone because others may not understand.
I don't blame you at all for feeling betrayed. Maybe you can gently talk to him and tell him that it is a personal outlet for you and not anything personal against him?
I agree with others here.
He has completely violated your privacy. It's none of his business what you write as you are writing this for you, to help you deal with things out of your head and onto paper. If he wants to write his side of things he's welcome to do this on his own journal.
Your boyfriend as someone says has some form of trust issues and the one thing everybody is entitled too is privacy.
I would either burn my journal pages after I read them or move them onto online or an app with a pincode onto your phone.
Journalling works very well as you are generally pouring out without the intention of reading it again.
I hope you find the solution that works for you best x
