Do looks really matter?

It seems so superficial. And maybe I’m beyond exhausted so I’m sensitive. I feel so ugly and unwanted. I really feel like *** about my appearance. I’ve always taken pride in it. My hair had grown so long. It had to be cut off, I know I had no choice. So accepting that is ok but I’m unable to accept how I look now. I miss my long curly hair.  I have like no clothes. Everything is big tees and biker shorts. I feel like a slob. I have one pair of sneakers I can wear. I don’t wear makeup like I used to because there’s no point. I feel unattractive and completely undesired and I hate it. I look in the mirror and I see a huge wrinkle between my eyes, a chubby face now, zits/scars and a neck scar. I’m trying to be kind to myself and know that I’m still healing from a major surgery but I feel as if I’m grieving myself entirely. I’ve always focused on nice clothes and accessories. I know that comes from my past and getting made fun of. When I dress nicely, I feel whole. I feel put together.  I also don’t have a partner, this is further allowing my mind to feel like I’ll live alone forever. And it breaks my entire heart 💔

@peachThinker662 I feel the same. i think that's how life has become. I wasted my time pleasing people that i wanted to be with but i was always rejected. I still feel looks matters. I have been living with a broken heart for idk how long. Being lonely is what hits you. I try to work hard all day and then i see there's nobody to share life with. It does feel bad but i think it is just helping us build resilience to something big that we are unaware of. Every day is difficult but it hurts to be in this way. I have stopped expecting people to be around but its tough. I hope to get more strength as it always feels like the end but i think its the new beginning to grow.

Loneliness creeps up on you. It’s exhausting to continuously cheer for yourself and feel like you are getting no where. Strength for both of us 🥂

I’m so sorry your going through that.. Honestly I know what it feels like because I always loved my wavy spiky hair but sometimes it looks really awful and flat, and my own face can look fat sometimes and it makes me uncomfortable. I promise you that you are NOT alone and you WILL find a partner if you never give up, and it breaks my heart too that your hurting by your appearance, but really I don’t care what you look like I wish I could give you a big warm hug because you deserve it. Stay strong and God bless you ❤️

@Skyfall1029

 thank you. I really hope that I can feel the way about myself as I do for others here. Because it’s a fact, none of us know what any of us look like and we just want to hug, love and comfort genuinely. 🫂 💛

@peachThinker662 I just want to say first: this pain is real, and you don’t sound superficial at all. You're grieving—and that kind of grief, the grief of not recognizing yourself, of missing the way you once felt beautiful and whole—it runs deep. It’s not about vanity. It’s about identity, safety, confidence, and connection. And I’ve felt that ache too… looking in the mirror and wondering where the me I used to know has gone.

It makes total sense that you’re struggling to feel desirable when so much of what made you feel like you—your hair, your clothes, your little rituals of care—has been stripped away or put on pause. When those outer expressions are gone, it can feel like your inner self has gone quiet too. But I promise she’s still there.

And I need to say this: the way you expressed all of this? It’s so beautiful. The honesty, the self-awareness, the longing, the care you show for yourself, even in the middle of heartbreak—that is stunning to witness. You don’t have to be wearing makeup or accessories to be radiant. Your words already are.

You’re not broken. You’re rebuilding. And that doesn’t mean going back to who you were before—because maybe she was holding it together with sheer willpower. Maybe the version of you that’s emerging now is someone more whole, even if it feels messy and uncertain right now.

If it helps, try asking:
What small thing used to bring me joy or make me feel beautiful—just for me? And is there a way to give myself a little taste of that today?

It doesn’t have to be a full transformation. Maybe it’s a swipe of lip balm. Maybe it’s playing music you used to get dressed to. Maybe it’s just saying, “Hey, I’m still in here,” to your reflection.

You are not alone in this feeling. Not even close. And you’re still deeply worthy of love, care, and beauty—even when you don’t feel it. I see it in your words already.

Thank you! I like that it’s “on pause” right now. I’m just starting to get back to myself physically. I am rebuilding. I would love if the new version of me is emerging. Someone who accepts her flaws and walks with her head high and approachable. I don’t like looking at my reflection. I’ve tried activities in the past and all I do is cry. I did go to the thrift shop and bought my self a cute sundress to make today feel a little more lighter 💖 I’ve been told before I have good self awareness, I never saw this as I quality so I like that was pointed out.

❤️❤️❤️❤️

@peachThinker662 I am a guy.  After reading your story, all I kept saying to myself was, “So?”  Guys that are worth anything look at the heart and mind and see what you have as a bonus.  For guys who look at your body alone are just older boys that never grew up out of the teenage part of their lives.  There are men out there.  It seems like there are becoming less and less, but focus on your heart and they will find you.

I appreciate the guy point of view. No disrespect when I say this but, I’m sure you don’t look at woman and say “she’s not good looking but I bet she has a great personality, let me chat with her” 😔

You are correct in that assumption. However, any man worth anything, would look past it to see how both of you can improve each others’ lives, especially when they have gotten somewhat to know you. Beauty is only skin deep and only lasts a short time. Your heart and mind lasts forever. If you don’t have a good heart, it’s more ugly than any beautiful woman.

Hey, u know looks don't matter character does u know why I say this because I have amazing facial features to be honest and I didn't knew it untill I was 16 when I changed school because I was bullied for the way I look but they were just trying to project their insecurities on me and i accepted all the *** they told me and now I m 21 and I know I have amazing face and talent , I m so insecure , have very low self esteem and struggle to make friends and some are attracted to me because of my looks because I fake it I m afraid to let my real self out though I m working on it, I know it sounds so negative but I have learnt that u matter just the way u r ur scars add character to your personality they make you more intresting and if anyone tells u otherwise probably they are emotionally immature and shallow .

This is definitely something I can relate with. My parent was always after me to “make friends”. When I look back I had plenty, always something to do. However, I do remember others whispering, guys gravitating towards other girls. I look back at photos and like damn no wonder why. That’s what boosted me up to the point of faking it till I make was the hair and the makeup. The nice clothes. I do let my quirky personality shine through and my compassion. I don’t want a guy just to like me for my looks but I always don’t want to quiver every time I see my reflection in the mirror. I hate that I feel this way and I hate that I was brought up not feeling good enough. Then to go to school and deal with it there. Some inner child healing needed. 😪

Your reflection doesn’t lie. But your grief sometimes speaks louder than the truth.

You miss the version of you that felt polished, seen, desired. And that’s okay. But don’t forget your scars are proof you survived something.

When the glow fades, and the hair’s gone, and the mirror’s unkind... all you’ve got left is who you really are.

And somehow, that’s still someone fighting to feel again. Still someone worth loving.

Don’t rush the rebirth. You’re not meant to be who you were. You’re meant to become someone even more real.

@peachThinker662

I can feel the weight of what you're going through, and I want you to know that none of what you're feeling is superficial—it’s real, and it matters. Grieving a change in how you look or feel about yourself after surgery, especially when you've always placed importance on your appearance, is incredibly tough. It’s not just about hair or clothes; it’s about losing a part of your identity, and that’s a really painful thing to process.

You're being so hard on yourself, but please remember that you're in the middle of healing—physically, emotionally, and mentally—and it’s okay to not feel ‘okay’ right away. I can’t tell you exactly how you’ll feel tomorrow or next week, but I truly hope that, with time and gentleness, you’ll begin to see yourself with the same love and compassion that you deserve.

Even if we’ve never met, I see someone who’s feeling vulnerable and raw, and that’s a strength in itself. There’s so much more to you than what you can see in the mirror right now. You are worthy of care and kindness—especially from yourself. Don’t let this moment define you, even though it feels overwhelming.

I hope you’re able to give yourself the space and kindness you need to heal. I’m here if you ever need someone to talk to. 💛

SO So so much vulnerability 😭

plus I’m a mom. I give to my child more than myself. I’m always on the back burner.

I feel like I’ve been working on feeling better about myself for SO long. Maybe Ive dealing with life’s challenges first.

It’s like, ok I did this—I SHOULD feel proud of myself. But it only lasts for a moment. I’m constantly seeking the approval of others. I think that’s also deep rooted. Abandonment trauma. Ugh so much trauma that I’ve over come and became a great mom 🥹

Ooh I’m in my feelings now. Just typing feedback to your post. 💖
